The University of Bath has launched the Bath Centre for Earth System Governance (BCESG), a research centre focused on how societies can govern global environmental change and sustainability transitions. Announced during the 2026 Earth System Governance conference in Bath, the centre is directed by Professor Yixian Sun and aims to connect interdisciplinary research with advice and recommendations for stakeholders.
What is the Bath Centre for Earth System Governance?
BCESG is an interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Bath. Its work brings together perspectives from politics, economics, public policy and management to build knowledge about environmental change and sustainability transitions. Bath describes the centre as part of its effort to expand its role in international sustainability-governance research, rather than as a body that has already produced policy outcomes. Bath Centre for Earth System Governance overview
The centre says it aims to provide timely advice to stakeholders and develop effective, fair governance that supports social-ecological resilience. Its remit includes climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, pollution, sustainable development and environmental justice.
What will the centre research?
BCESG studies governance at several connected levels, from international arrangements to decisions made by individuals and businesses. Its stated approach is to examine how these layers interact and to develop recommendations for stakeholders.

| Governance level | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Global | Governance arrangements addressing environmental challenges across national borders. |
| National | Country-level policies and regulations. |
| Local and individual-led | Local initiatives and actions led by individuals. |
| Private | Governance involving private actors. |
For example, a sustainability issue may involve international commitments, domestic rules, local initiatives and private-sector action at the same time. BCESG’s stated remit is to study these connections; the centre’s launch announcement does not report specific policy changes or research results already delivered.
Who leads the centre?
Professor Yixian Sun is BCESG’s director. Bath’s launch announcement also identifies him as chair of the 2026 conference and a newly appointed co-chair of the Earth System Governance Project’s Scientific Steering Committee. The wider project is an international research community; it is distinct from Bath’s new university centre. University of Bath launch announcement
