Sanders, and Wendy Wilson White. The available reporting does not yet provide a complete, comparable account of who funded each campaign. A September 30 report said voters would not get their first comprehensive view of candidates’ campaign financing until about a week before the election.
Who is on the ballot?
The Mississippi Secretary of State lists these five candidates for District 7. The sample ballot identifies each as an Independent and includes a write-in option:
- Gwen Agho
- Greta Mack Harris
- Darla Palmer
- Marvin L. Sanders
- Wendy Wilson White
The Secretary of State’s list and sample ballot establish the official ballot names and labels; they do not establish the candidates’ platforms or campaign finances.
Why is this a special election, and what term will the winner serve?
Governor Tate Reeves called the special election for November 3, 2026, after appointing Brad McCullouch to serve as district attorney pending the election. The winner will fill the remainder of the term, which ends in January 2028.

The vacancy followed former district attorney Jody Owens’s resignation after he pleaded guilty in a federal bribery case. That case concerns Owens; it is not evidence of conduct by any of the candidates in this election.
Reeves said in his July 10, 2026, appointment announcement: “Everyone knows the criminal justice system in Hinds County is far from perfect, but I am convinced the rank-and-file assistant district attorneys who serve Hinds County do an admirable job prosecuting criminals.” This was the governor’s stated rationale and opinion.

Local reporting says McCullouch, who had worked in the Hinds County DA’s office, is not running because he lives outside the Seventh Judicial District. That eligibility explanation is attributed to the reporting.
What is known about the candidates’ experience?
Local reporting describes four candidates as current or former staff of the district attorney’s office and Palmer as a criminal defense attorney. These are reported career backgrounds, not endorsements or predictions about how a candidate would lead the office.
Rank #3
| Candidate | Background described in local reporting |
|---|---|
| Gwen Agho | Assistant district attorney |
| Greta Mack Harris | Former Hinds County assistant district attorney |
| Darla Palmer | Criminal defense attorney |
| Marvin L. Sanders | Former Hinds County assistant district attorney; also served as an assistant attorney general |
| Wendy Wilson White | Assistant district attorney |
Career history can help voters understand where candidates have worked, but it does not establish their plans for caseloads, case review, office management, or public accountability. The available reporting does not provide a complete, equally detailed set of candidate answers on those issues.
What is known about campaign funding?
A September 30, 2026, report said shortened special-election rules would limit pre-election campaign-finance disclosure, with the first comprehensive view of the five campaigns expected about a week before voting. The report said last-minute contributions over $200 must be reported at least two days before the election. Those timing details describe what was reported on September 30; voters should consult the latest official filings as they become available for an up-to-date picture.
Rank #4
The available reporting does not provide complete, comparable campaign-finance totals or a full accounting of each candidate’s funding sources. It reported that Sanders had held one fundraiser at the Continental Cigar Club in downtown Jackson. Asked about his campaign coffers, he replied, “You’d have to ask my wife,” a joking response reported by Mississippi Today. Neither the fundraiser nor the remark, by itself, establishes the campaign’s total receipts or the identities and amounts of all contributors.
For a useful comparison, look at official filings for each candidate and check the reporting period, filing date, contribution amounts, and whether late contributions are included. A filing made before the final disclosure deadlines may not capture all money raised before Election Day.

What election information should voters keep in perspective?
The Hinds County Election Commission says it oversees county elections and reports 108 voting precincts and more than 149,000 registered voters. Those are countywide administrative figures, not a forecast of turnout in this special election or a current count specific to District 7. The sources reviewed did not establish a race-specific turnout estimate or independent polling figure.
