Diablo IV offers a broader set of interconnected character and item systems to learn. That difference can make Dungeons II easier to pick up, especially with friends, but it does not prove Diablo IV is too complicated for everyone—or that Dungeons II has no buildcrafting.
What the comparison actually means
The title is an editorial judgment about design priorities, not a measured ranking of complexity. In a June 2026 hands-on preview based on a demo, Xbox Wire editor Will Fulton described modern ARPGs as adding endgame systems for players who want to customize and min-max. He said Dungeons II increases build expression while keeping play friendly and streamlined. His assessment is one previewer’s view, not an objective score for either game. Read Fulton’s Xbox Wire preview.
The practical distinction is how many systems players must learn and how those systems interact. Diablo IV layers skill and passive choices, Paragon progression, gear powers, and item modification. Dungeons II foregrounds combat and co-op while still asking players to make equipment and loadout choices.
How the build decisions differ
| Area | Minecraft Dungeons II | Diablo IV |
|---|---|---|
| Character and loadout choices | Weapons, armor, enchants, talismans, and artifacts combine to shape a playstyle, according to the official launch description. Minecraft launch page | Class skill trees and passives sit alongside gear that can change skills, according to Blizzard’s systems overview. Blizzard systems overview |
| Progression beyond early play | The cited launch description lists loadout components but does not establish a comparable endgame progression system. | Paragon Boards unlock at level 50, adding another progression layer, according to Blizzard’s overview. |
| Gear and item systems | Equipment and artifacts are part of the build choices named in the launch description. | Blizzard describes legendary gear effects, extraction of legendary bonuses, and item crafting. A later seasonal announcement also describes changes to Tempering and Masterworking; those are announced changes, not confirmation here of their live status. Blizzard’s seasonal announcement |
This is not a claim that one game has meaningful choices and the other does not. The contrast is that Diablo IV explicitly spreads decisions across more documented, interacting systems, while Dungeons II’s official description emphasizes a smaller set of gear and loadout components.

Why Dungeons II may feel easier to start
Dungeons II is an action-RPG adventure, not the open-world Minecraft building sandbox. Mojang describes it as narrative-driven combat, distinguishing it from Minecraft’s exploration, resource gathering, and construction. The official description presents loadout experimentation without requiring players to begin by learning the breadth of systems described for Diablo IV. Mojang’s Dungeons II FAQ and game information.
Fulton framed the appeal as less friction between a new item and getting back to gameplay. He also characterized the sequel as finding a middle ground between the first game and its genre peers. That’s a preview judgment about the demo, not a guarantee that every player will find the final game simple or frictionless.

Loot still asks for attention
Streamlined does not mean hands-off. Players still find and combine equipment and other loadout components, so choosing what to keep and how to shape a playstyle remains part of the loop. GamesRadar+ reviewer Justin Towell praised the accessible start and experimentation but also reported bugs, repetition, and frequent loot checking. Those are his launch-review observations, not established outcomes for every player. Read the GamesRadar+ review.
Towell said he completed the story in about 12 hours, with four hours in co-op and the remainder solo. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not a completion-time promise or an estimate for every play style.

Which game fits your preferences?
- Consider Dungeons II if you want combat and co-op to be easy to approach, while still having equipment choices to explore.
- Consider Diablo IV if you enjoy building a character through layered skill, progression, gear, and item systems—or want more systems to study and tune.
- Don’t choose on the word “simple” alone. Dungeons II still involves loot decisions, and the review reports that checking loot can be frequent. Conversely, Diablo IV’s additional layers are a draw for players who enjoy min-maxing, not necessarily a defect.
