A Raspberry Pi Can Be Better Than a Chromecast—for Local Media

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Raspberry Pi can be a better TV addition than a Chromecast if your priority is a configurable media center for files you own. With Kodi or LibreELEC, a Pi can play a central role in a local-media setup. It is not, however, a plug-and-play Chromecast replacement: you assemble and configure it yourself, and the available evidence does not establish Google Cast receiver support or equivalent access to subscription apps.

When a Raspberry Pi makes more sense

Choose the Pi route if you want to build a media center around your own video collection and value configuration over convenience. Kodi provides a Raspberry Pi download, and LibreELEC offers Raspberry Pi images. Together they provide a practical path to putting a Kodi-based interface on a TV. Kodi’s Raspberry Pi download page and LibreELEC’s Raspberry Pi downloads document those options.

This is a small computer project, not a streaming stick you simply connect and start using. You choose the Pi hardware and software, install the image, and arrange the parts needed for your setup. Storage, power, HDMI connectivity, and possibly an enclosure or input device may be part of the build; confirm what is included with any hardware you buy rather than assuming a board is a complete TV kit.

What a Chromecast does differently

A Chromecast or Google TV streaming device is purpose-built for connecting to a television. Google documents HDMI output and automatic over-the-air updates for its devices. The Pi approach trades that dedicated-device simplicity for flexibility: you select and configure the hardware and media-center software yourself. See Google’s Chromecast and Google TV device specifications for the relevant device details.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not treat the two as interchangeable based on the word “TV.” The available documentation does not establish that a Pi running Kodi acts as a Google Cast receiver, nor does it demonstrate equivalent official support for subscription services. If casting from a phone or using a particular streaming app is essential, verify support for that exact service and device before choosing the Pi.

Video support depends on the Raspberry Pi generation

Video capability is not uniform across Pi models. LibreELEC’s hardware guidance identifies Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 as having native HEVC hardware decoding in its supported Pi group. It describes HEVC playback up to 4K for those models under specified conditions. Older Pi models rely on software decoding, which carries greater practical limits; the documentation also notes memory constraints for 1 GB variants. These are LibreELEC-specific support statements, not a guarantee that every file, display, configuration, or software release will work at a particular resolution. Check the LibreELEC Raspberry Pi hardware guidance for the exact model and current release before buying for a particular format.

LibreELEC’s downloads listing showed version 12.2 with Kodi 21.3, and Kodi’s Raspberry Pi page showed Kodi v21.3 (Omega) in the reviewed listings. Software versions change, so consult those pages at setup time rather than treating these version numbers as permanent.

Why subscription streaming needs checking

Protected streaming can involve more than installing Kodi. LibreELEC’s Omega 12.2 release notes discuss handling Widevine libraries for DRM-protected services, including Netflix and Prime Video. That establishes a technical dependency and possible configuration work; it does not establish that either service has an officially supported Kodi app, is certified for a Pi, or will play reliably in a particular build. Check each service’s current support for the device and software you intend to use. See LibreELEC’s Omega 12.2 release notes.

Compare the complete setup with the streaming device

Decision Raspberry Pi with Kodi or LibreELEC Chromecast or Google TV device
Main role DIY, configurable media center; a strong fit to consider for local media. Dedicated HDMI streaming hardware; Google documents automatic over-the-air updates.
Setup You select hardware and software and configure the system; LibreELEC supplies Pi images. Purpose-built device. Refer to Google’s device specifications for setup and features.
Local media and customization Kodi and LibreELEC provide a local-media-center route. Not established by the specifications cited here.
Video capability Depends on model, memory, file, and software. LibreELEC documents native HEVC decoding on Pi 4 and 5 in its supported group. Output and resolution vary by device; consult Google’s specifications for the model.
Subscription services and DRM Do not assume official app parity; Widevine handling may require configuration. Specific service availability is not established by the specifications cited here.
Total cost Price the complete build, including any needed peripherals, at the time of purchase; no current total is established here. Compare the current price and bundle contents for the specific device; no current price is established here.

How to decide

  • Pick a Raspberry Pi if local files and configuration are your main goals, and you are willing to install and maintain the media-center setup.
  • Pick a Chromecast or Google TV device if you want a dedicated HDMI streamer with Google’s documented update behavior, or your decision depends on casting or subscription apps. Confirm the specific app or casting support you need for the exact model.
  • Price the whole Pi build, not just the board. Check the needed storage, power supply, HDMI connection, and any enclosure or input accessories against the kit contents before comparing totals.
  • Match the Pi generation to your media. For HEVC playback, use LibreELEC’s current model-specific documentation; do not infer the same capability for older Pi models.
