A 37-year-old Lynn man, Zachary Brodeur, was charged by federal criminal complaint with one count of receipt of child pornography, according to an Oct. 2, 2026 announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. The charge is an allegation, not a conviction. Prosecutors say Brodeur remained in state custody on related charges after appearing in federal court in Boston on Sept. 29.
What prosecutors allege
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says charging documents allege that Brodeur was identified in an online chatroom while interacting with a law-enforcement agent posing as a 14-year-old boy. Prosecutors further allege that a later search of his phone found approximately 138 videos depicting child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in its downloads folder. The release says the videos depicted minors between five and 11 years old. These are prosecutors’ descriptions of allegations, not independently established findings.
Charge and court status
The announced charge is one count of receipt of child pornography, filed by criminal complaint. The announcement says Brodeur made an initial appearance in federal court in Boston on Sept. 29, 2026, and remained detained in state custody on related charges. It does not establish the status of any later federal court proceedings or the ultimate outcome.
Prior conviction described in the announcement
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Brodeur was previously convicted as a Youthful Offender in Massachusetts state courts for rape of a child and possession of child pornography. The announcement does not provide underlying court records or further details.

Potential penalties are not a sentence
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the receipt charge carries potential imprisonment of 15 to 40 years, at least five years and up to lifetime supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. These are possible penalties described by prosecutors, not a sentence imposed in this case. The release says sentencing would be determined by a federal district court judge under applicable statutes and the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
Agencies and prosecution
The announcement identifies U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and Ted E. Docks, FBI Boston Division Special Agent in Charge, as making the announcement. It credits the Lynn Police Department and Scituate Police Department with assistance and names Assistant U.S. Attorney Catherine Conroy of the Major Crimes Unit as prosecutor. The case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in May 2006.
