9 Linux Command-Line Tools for Common Terminal Tasks

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These nine Linux tools address different sources of terminal friction: managing long-running sessions, finding files, navigating directories, inspecting processes, and reading or editing text. Start with the task that slows you down; the source article offers no benchmark or measured time savings, so its productivity claim is best understood as a practical rationale, not a quantified result.

Choose a tool for the job

Tool Best fit Setup or learning consideration
tmux Keep terminal sessions, windows, and panes organized Learn its keyboard-driven session and pane controls
tldr Look up concise command examples Complements rather than replaces full manual pages
Vim Edit code, configuration, and other text from the terminal Modal editing can take practice
Fastfetch Display a concise system overview Useful when you want a quick visual summary
fzf Fuzzy-search and select items from a list Most useful when connected to a relevant list or shell workflow
bat Read text files with syntax highlighting On some Debian and Ubuntu systems, the command may be named batcat
Oh My Zsh Customize a Zsh shell with themes and plugins Requires Zsh and configuration choices
htop Inspect running processes and resource use interactively It is a process viewer, not a session or file-search tool
zoxide Jump to frequently visited directories Needs shell initialization and learns from directory use

Keep terminal work running with tmux

tmux is a terminal multiplexer: it lets you organize work into sessions, windows, and panes. A session can be detached and reattached later, while programs in it continue running. This is useful for remote work or tasks such as keeping a code session separate from log monitoring and debugging.

Choose tmux when the problem is preserving or arranging terminal work. It does not search for files or provide shortcuts to directories; those are different jobs.

Find commands and files without exact names

Use tldr for a quick command reminder

tldr presents concise, community-driven command examples. It is suited to recalling common syntax when a full manual page is more detail than you need. For comprehensive options and authoritative documentation, use the command’s manual or project documentation instead.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use fzf to filter a list interactively

fzf is a fuzzy finder: type part of a name or phrase and narrow a list of files, directories, command history, or other items without entering an exact match. It can also work with a list produced by another command. For example, piping package selections into fzf can make a long list easier to filter; the exact command that produces that list depends on your distribution and workflow.

Move around directories with zoxide

zoxide learns which directories you visit and ranks them, letting you jump to a frequently used location with a shorter query instead of repeatedly typing a full path. It is a navigation aid, not a general fuzzy selector: use fzf to choose among arbitrary lists and zoxide to return to places you visit often.

After installing it, configure the shell initialization line for your shell in the appropriate startup file. The required line and file vary by shell, so follow the instructions for your installed zoxide package and shell rather than copying a generic configuration blindly.

Read and edit text in the terminal

Use bat for more readable file output

bat is a cat-style viewer that adds syntax highlighting to text files. It is helpful when scanning code or configuration. On some Debian and Ubuntu installations, the executable is called batcat because another package uses the name bat; check the command name provided by your distribution.

Use Vim for keyboard-based editing

Vim is a modal text editor for code, configuration files, and other text. Its keyboard-centered navigation and editing can be convenient in a terminal, including on a remote server, but the modal approach may feel unfamiliar at first. It is worth learning if terminal editing is a regular part of your work; occasional users may prefer an editor they already know.

Inspect system details and processes

Use Fastfetch for a system overview

Fastfetch displays information such as the CPU, memory, disk use, kernel version, uptime, and system architecture in a compact presentation. It is intended for a quick overview, not a detailed diagnostic report.

Install selectively and check your distribution

Package names, repositories, and installation procedures can differ among Linux distributions and may change between releases. The source article discusses examples for Ubuntu and Debian, Fedora and CentOS, and Arch, but those examples are not independently verified here as current installation instructions. Check your distribution’s package repository and each project’s current documentation before installing; also confirm the executable name and shell initialization instructions for your system.

  • For persistent terminal work, start with tmux.
  • For fuzzy selection, try fzf; for frequent directory jumps, consider zoxide.
  • For command reminders and readable text output, consider tldr and bat.
  • For process inspection or a system overview, choose htop or Fastfetch according to the information you need.
  • Choose Vim or Oh My Zsh when their editing or customization benefits justify the learning and configuration effort.

The recommendations and use cases above reflect Haroon Javed’s How-To Geek article, “These Linux tools increased my command-line productivity: Here’s how,” dated Oct. 3, 2026. It is a roundup rather than a reported comparative test: it supplies no timed trials, user-study results, or measured productivity gains.
