Sansa remembers the Hound kissing her because George R. R. Martin deliberately wrote a mismatch between the event as narrated and Sansa’s later memory. In A Clash of Kings, Sandor Clegane threatens Sansa and leaves without a kiss being described; in A Storm of Swords and again in A Feast for Crows, she recalls one. Martin identified the discrepancy as an intentional use of an “unreliable narrator,” but did not publicly give one definitive explanation for what the memory means.
What happens in the original scene?
The discrepancy begins in A Clash of Kings, during the Battle of the Blackwater. In Sansa VII, Sandor Clegane—the Hound—comes to Sansa’s room drunk and asks for the song she promised him. She sings the Mother’s Hymn. He falls silent, removes the dagger from her throat, and leaves. The scene, as summarized in the chapter reference, does not describe him kissing her.
The chapter references and scene details are documented by A Wiki of Ice and Fire, which cites the novels. Exact page numbers vary across editions, so the chapter is a more reliable locator than a page number.
When does Sansa remember a kiss?
Her first explicit later recollection appears in A Storm of Swords, Sansa II. Thinking about kissing, she recalls the night with the Hound and says: “He kissed me and threatened to kill me, and made me sing him a song.” The line adds a kiss to the earlier scene’s account.

The memory recurs in A Feast for Crows, Alayne II. Sansa thinks of Sandor’s “cruel mouth” pressing against hers and later remembers: “He took a song and a kiss, and left me nothing but a bloody cloak.” Because the kiss appears in more than one later recollection, the contrast is not limited to a single stray phrase.
There is also a useful contrast in A Storm of Swords, Arya XIII: as Sandor lies dying, he remembers Sansa’s song, but does not mention a kiss. That difference underscores the conflicting accounts; it does not, by itself, establish why Sansa remembers the event differently.

What did George R. R. Martin say?
Martin addressed the inconsistency directly. In a response recorded October 5, 2002, and preserved in Westeros.org’s “Sansa’s Memory” archive, he wrote: “Well, not every inconsistency is a mistake, actually. Some are quite intentional. File this one under ‘unreliable narrator’ and feel free to ponder its meaning…”
An earlier comment, attributed to June 26, 2001 and quoted in the chapter reference, makes his intent even clearer: “You will see, in A STORM OF SWORDS and later volumes, that Sansa remembers the Hound kissing her the night he came to her bedroom… but if you look at the scene, he never does. That will eventually mean something, but just now it’s a subtle touch, something most of the readers may not even pick up on.”

Those comments establish that Martin regarded the mismatch as intentional, connected it to unreliable narration, and said it would eventually mean something. They do not supply a final, specific explanation for the kiss or confirm any one theory about Sansa’s feelings.
What might the memory mean?
“Unreliable narrator” describes a gap between what a character recounts and what the text has previously shown; it does not automatically identify the cause of that gap. Readers may interpret Sansa’s recollection through fear, trauma, confusion, romantic expectations, or some combination, but those are readings of the novels—not explanations Martin confirmed in the cited comments.

The important distinction is between the textual fact and its interpretation: Sansa later remembers a kiss that the earlier scene does not narrate, and Martin deliberately drew attention to that difference. The available author comments invite readers to consider its meaning without settling it.

The evidence for the “UnKiss” comes from the novels: A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, and A Feast for Crows. HBO describes Game of Thrones as based on Martin’s book series, but that adaptation relationship does not establish that the television series depicts Sansa remembering a kiss. It is more precise to call this a novel detail unless discussing a specific screen scene supported by separate evidence.
