Jim Chalmers Pitches Australia to Japanese Investors in Tokyo Visit

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers is due in Tokyo for two days of meetings with Japanese business leaders and investors, where he is expected to promote Australia as an investment destination. The visit’s schedule and pitch are reported by the Sydney Morning Herald; no matching official itinerary was available to confirm them independently. “Safe bet” is the pitch, not a guarantee of investment returns.

What Chalmers is reported to be pitching

The 3 October 2026 report says Chalmers will make the case for investment in Australian resources and critical minerals, renewable energy, AI and data centres. It also points to capital held in Australia’s superannuation system, the country’s perceived stability and its role in supply chains.

The report attributes this line to Chalmers: “If investors want to make the most of the defining decade ahead, nowhere offers more opportunities than Australia.” It also quotes him describing Australia as “a reliable, responsible middle power with strong economic foundations and huge advantages in areas like energy, AI and critical minerals”. These quotations are reproduced by the report; they have not been independently checked against a transcript or recording.

That framing is an investment-promotion argument. It identifies areas where the government says Australia can attract capital, but does not establish that a particular project is available, that an investment will proceed, or that it will deliver a return.

What the Tokyo visit reportedly includes

The report says Tokyo is the first stop on a regional trip expected to include Bangkok and Hong Kong. In Tokyo, Chalmers is due to meet more than 30 executives and investors, including Mitsui & Co. leader Kenichi Hori and Mitsubishi Corporation executive vice president Juro Baba. It also says he will chair roundtables on investment and residential development.

These are reported schedule details, not an independently confirmed government itinerary. The reported meetings indicate the intended audience for the pitch, but are not evidence of investment commitments.

How much Japan invests in Australia

Japan is a major investor, but the figures need to be read with their measure and reference year attached. DFAT’s statistics distinguish total investment from direct investment:

Measure Figure What it means
Total investment, end of 2025 A$286.4 billion; 5.6% of Australia’s total foreign investment Japan was Australia’s fourth-largest foreign investor. Total investment includes direct, portfolio and other investment. DFAT’s table was last updated in May 2026. DFAT investment statistics
Direct foreign investment, 2024 A$159.5 billion; 12.5% of direct foreign investment Japan was Australia’s second-largest direct foreign investor. This is a different measure and year from the total-investment figure. DFAT Japan country brief

The two amounts should not be treated as a year-on-year comparison: one covers total investment at the end of 2025, while the other measures direct investment in 2024.

Why Japan is an important investment partner

DFAT characterises the Australia–Japan economic relationship as complementary and enduring. Australia supplies Japan with energy, mineral resources and food, while Japanese investment spans sectors including renewables, critical minerals, housing, financial services, infrastructure, information and communications technology, food and agribusiness.

This existing relationship gives Chalmers a concrete basis for discussing areas such as energy and minerals. But sector-wide ties are not the same as a new commitment made during this visit: the reported opportunity areas should be distinguished from signed deals or completed projects.

What to make of the “safe bet” claim

Calling Australia a “safe bet” is advocacy aimed at investors, not an objective finding about risk. The report presents stability and supply-chain reliability as parts of the government’s case. Whether an investment is suitable or successful depends on the specific project and its risks; the promotional language alone cannot establish that.

The report also says Australia provides around 40% of Japan’s LNG and refers to tension over a planned domestic gas reservation policy. Those details are reported there, but are not independently corroborated by the official sources cited here. They should be treated as the report’s account rather than as confirmed figures or a definitive description of the policy.

What the visit could signal—and what it cannot show

The visit is a bid to build investor interest around energy, minerals, technology and development, against a backdrop of substantial Japanese investment in Australia. The reported itinerary and pitch describe the government’s outreach; the available investment statistics establish the scale and breadth of the bilateral relationship. Neither, on its own, demonstrates that the Tokyo meetings will produce new investment.
