A device can have several MAC addresses because MAC addresses belong to network interfaces, not necessarily to whole physical devices. A laptop, phone, router, or virtualized system may use physical and software-created interfaces, and privacy features can also assign a locally administered address that differs from a device’s factory address. Multiple entries—or an address that changes—do not by themselves indicate a second device or a security problem.
What a MAC address identifies
A MAC address is a link-layer address associated with a network interface. That interface may be a physical Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter, or a logical interface created by software or network configuration. One physical device can therefore present several addresses, while one network appliance can also use an address for a virtual interface.
For the common 48-bit IEEE 802 MAC address format, two bits in the first address octet carry important meaning: the individual/group bit indicates whether the address refers to an individual interface or a group, and the universal/local bit distinguishes a universally administered address from a locally administered one. See RFC 9724.
Why a device or network may show multiple addresses
Separate physical interfaces
A computer with Ethernet and Wi-Fi has distinct network interfaces, each with its own address. A device may also have more than one wireless or wired interface, depending on its hardware and configuration. A router’s interface addresses can likewise differ from the addresses of client devices connected through it.

Virtual and logical interfaces
Software can create interfaces for bridging, virtualization, or other networking functions. Their addresses do not necessarily correspond to additional physical hardware. For example, Cisco’s 8000 Series documentation describes a Bridge-Group Virtual Interface (BVI), a virtual interface that connects a bridge domain to routed traffic. On the documented platform, BVI interfaces share one MAC address by default, but a unique address can be configured. That is a Cisco-specific behavior, not a general rule for routers: Cisco 8000 Series Integrated Routing and Bridging guide.
Locally administered addresses
A universally administered address is assigned by a manufacturer. A locally administered address can instead be set by an operating system or network administrator. The universal/local bit marks which category an address belongs to; a local address should not be treated as reliable evidence of a device’s manufacturer or hardware identity. RFC 9724 describes this distinction and its relevance to generated addresses: RFC 9724.

Why a phone’s MAC address may change
Wi-Fi MAC randomization uses generated addresses to make it harder to track a device through one persistent address on a shared medium. As RFC 9724 puts it, “One way to address this privacy concern is by using randomly generated MAC addresses.”
Randomized does not necessarily mean a new address for every connection. RFC 9724 describes possible modes including an address that is per-device, per-boot, or per-network. Depending on the mode and operating-system behavior, an address may persist for a long period, change after a reboot, or be generated for a network attachment. Settings and policies differ by OS and version, so there is no single rotation schedule that applies to all phones or computers. See RFC 9724 and RFC 9797.

Some vendor guidance describes devices maintaining a randomized address per SSID, and notes that duplicate addresses are possible but rare. That is not a guarantee for every client or operating system: Cisco DNA Center Q&A for Randomized MAC Addresses.
What a changed MAC address can affect
Networks use MAC addresses in link-layer forwarding and in address-resolution processes. When a client changes its address, network equipment or management systems that associate a client with a stable address may treat it as a new client. The practical effect depends on the client’s IP configuration, when the address changes, network policy, and the lifetime of cached mappings.

- DHCP assignment: A randomized address may be treated as a different client for DHCP purposes, potentially resulting in a different address or a new lease, depending on the server’s configuration.
- Static IP and neighbor caches: If a device retains a static IP while changing its MAC address, traffic can be interrupted until address-resolution information is refreshed. RFC 9797 discusses disruption to ARP and Neighbor Discovery mappings when addresses change within cache lifetimes; Cisco also describes this deployment consideration. See RFC 9797 and Cisco’s randomized-MAC guidance.
- Access rules and inventory: A system that uses a MAC address for allowlists, device records, or client recognition may see a changed address as a different entry. The outcome depends on that system’s rules and how it identifies clients.
How to interpret multiple entries
Before concluding that entries represent separate devices, compare the interface and network context. The same address appearing in separate network contexts does not automatically indicate a collision; duplicate addresses matter most when they occur on the same Layer 2 network or VLAN. Useful details include:
- Interface: Is the entry for Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a bridge, a virtual adapter, or a router gateway interface?
- Address type: Is it universally administered or locally administered?
- Lifetime: Does it persist, change after reboot, or vary by network attachment?
- Scope: Are the entries on the same Layer 2 network/VLAN or in separate network contexts?
- Operational symptoms: Is there an actual problem with IP assignment, access controls, address resolution, or inventory—or only an extra listing?
Multiple or changing MAC addresses alone do not establish spoofing or compromise. They can result from ordinary interface design, local address configuration, or privacy randomization. Investigate further when the network context and other evidence point to a concrete problem, rather than treating an unfamiliar address by itself as proof.
