Budget for the host, the virtual machines (VMs) and containers running at the same time, and any extra memory needed by your storage setup. Proxmox VE’s documented minimum is 2 GB for the operating system and Proxmox VE services, plus memory designated for guests—not 2 GB for the whole machine.
What determines how much RAM your Proxmox server needs?
Your total depends mainly on what will run concurrently, how much memory those workloads actually use, and whether you use ZFS or Ceph. A small set of lightly used services has a different budget from several busy VMs. Proxmox’s official figures are planning guidance, not a universal recommendation for home labs.
- Host and Proxmox VE services: reserve at least the documented 2 GB baseline.
- Guests: estimate each VM and container based on its operating system and workload, then add the allocations for guests that will run at the same time.
- Storage: include additional memory if using ZFS or Ceph.
- Operating room: allow for workload peaks and routine host operation. Proxmox does not prescribe a universal headroom figure.
Proxmox VE Administration Guide, section 2.1.2, states: “Minimum 2 GB for the OS and Proxmox VE services, plus designated memory for guests.” The guide’s search excerpt does not expose a release date, so the figure is attributed to the current guide without assigning it a version date.
How to estimate your RAM requirement
- List the guests that will run together. Include every VM and container you expect to keep running, not only the largest or most important one.
- Estimate memory per guest from its workload. The guest’s operating system and services matter more than whether it is called a VM or a container. Add the planned guest allocations as your starting point.
- Add the host baseline. Include Proxmox VE’s 2 GB minimum for the OS and services in addition to guest memory.
- Account for ZFS or Ceph, if used. Proxmox advises approximately 1 GB of additional memory for every TB of used storage with either of these storage technologies. Treat that as approximate official guidance, not an exact guarantee for every configuration.
- Leave room for peaks. Workloads vary, and the sources do not establish one headroom number that fits all home servers. Avoid treating a sum of guest allocations as proof that the machine has enough capacity for every real-world peak.
- Check the result after deployment. Compare actual guest use and host memory pressure with your estimates, then revise allocations or capacity if needed.
The Administration Guide gives the storage estimate as “approximately 1GB of memory for every TB of used storage” for Ceph and ZFS. It does not establish a precise formula for every workload.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What container defaults and ballooning do—and do not—tell you
A container’s default is not a sizing recommendation
The Proxmox VE 9 beta pct(1) manual, version 9.0.6 dated 2025-07-31, shows a default container memory value of 512 MB and says container memory is controlled with the cgroup memory controller. That default describes a setting; it does not establish how much memory a particular application needs.
Ballooning helps with visibility, not physical capacity
Proxmox’s migration guidance recommends enabling the VM ballooning device even when dynamic ballooning is not needed, because it can gather detailed guest memory usage information. Use that information to refine estimates. Ballooning is not a substitute for enough physical RAM to handle the host and its workloads.

How to compare possible RAM capacities
There is no evidence-based universal capacity to label “enough” for every home server. Compare candidate configurations by the memory their simultaneous guests need and by their storage and workload assumptions:
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Simultaneous guest memory budget | Add the planned memory for the VMs and containers running together; this is the starting point for the guest portion of the budget. |
| Storage technology and used capacity | ZFS and Ceph bring Proxmox’s approximate additional-memory guidance of 1 GB per TB of used storage. |
| Workload and peak use | Guest allocations may not capture real peaks, so account for the services and activity expected on each guest. |
| Installed RAM and platform limits | A capacity increase is useful only if the motherboard, CPU, DIMM type, memory generation, and configuration support it. |
For example, a server with several concurrently running guests and ZFS should not be sized by looking only at the host’s 2 GB baseline or at a container’s default setting. Work through the guest budget, storage estimate, and operating room for that particular configuration; the available guidance does not support assigning it a one-size-fits-all total.

Before buying more RAM
If your planned workload exceeds installed capacity, more RAM may be the relevant upgrade. Confirm compatibility before choosing a kit:
- Check the motherboard and CPU documentation for supported memory generation and DIMM type.
- Verify the platform’s maximum capacity and supported module configuration.
- Compare those limits with the amount and arrangement of memory you plan to install.
No host model is specified here, so there is no single compatible RAM kit to recommend. For storage background, Proxmox’s pvesm(1) manual documents local and shared storage options; its version 7.4 edition is dated 2023-03-22 and is not a current memory-sizing recommendation.
