The family’s 2026 lawsuit argues that Dallas must cover the judgment under an employee liability plan. That is the family’s claim—not a court ruling that the city must pay. The available reporting also does not establish that the family has collected the award.
What the $98.65 million award covers
On November 20, 2024, a federal jury awarded Jean’s family $98.65 million against Guyger. The Associated Press reported that jurors found Guyger used excessive force and violated Jean’s constitutional rights. The award was reported as $38.65 million in compensatory damages and $60 million in punitive damages. It was a jury verdict, not a settlement. The Associated Press reported the verdict; Jean’s family’s legal team announced the amount and breakdown.
A verdict establishes an award against the defendant; it does not, by itself, establish that the family has received that amount. The reporting reviewed confirms the jury award but not how much, if any, has been collected.
Why the family is suing Dallas
In a separate suit reported in March and April 2026, Jean’s family asked a Dallas County court to require the city to pay the award. The family’s argument is that Dallas’s employee liability plan applies and that the city has failed to satisfy some or all of the judgment. The plan’s application and Dallas’s obligation remain disputed in the coverage available; no ruling establishing city liability or confirming payment is reported there. The Dallas Morning News reported on the new suit.

The two proceedings ask different questions:
| Proceeding | Defendant | Question | Status in the reporting |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 federal civil trial | Amber Guyger | Was Guyger liable for violating Jean’s rights, and what damages should be awarded? | A jury awarded $98.65 million against Guyger. |
| 2026 payment suit | City of Dallas | Does the city’s employee liability plan require it to cover the award? | The family’s claim seeking payment is reported; the sources do not establish a ruling that Dallas must pay. |
How the earlier Dallas dismissal fits in
Dallas was dismissed from the earlier federal civil-rights action in 2019. That ruling concerned the earlier case; it should not be treated as deciding the separate 2026 claim based on the city’s employee liability plan. The 2019 federal court order is available here.
The criminal case is separate from the civil award
Guyger fatally shot Jean in his Dallas apartment on September 6, 2018. Her criminal murder conviction was affirmed by the Texas Fifth Court of Appeals on November 17, 2021. A criminal conviction and sentence are distinct from a civil damages award, and neither resolves whether Dallas must pay under the plan. The Texas Fifth Court of Appeals decision.

The Associated Press reported that Guyger was granted parole on October 1, 2026, with the state prison system responsible for determining her release timing. That parole decision concerns her criminal sentence, not the family’s effort to collect the civil award. The Associated Press parole report.

The available reporting does not establish the final docket status of the 2026 suit, whether a court has interpreted the employee liability plan in this dispute, or how much of the award the family has collected, if any. The family’s lawyers described the 2024 verdict as consequential, saying: “Today’s verdict sends a clear message that law enforcement officers who commit crimes cannot be insulated from the consequences of their actions.” That was the legal team’s statement, not language from the court.
