According to Fox News, Sen. Eric Schmitt’s question about an Atlanta Hawks game rested on a mix-up: references he cited concerned the Iowa Hawkeyes, and former special counsel Jack Smith had attended an Iowa–Maryland women’s college basketball game—not an NBA game in Atlanta. Sen. Katie Britt was seated beside Schmitt, and a pool camera captured her reaction as the error became apparent. The report’s perjury accusation is Schmitt’s allegation, not an independently established finding.
What happened during the Senate exchange
Fox News reported that, during Tuesday testimony, Missouri Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt asked Smith about an Atlanta Hawks game on February 3, 2024, citing text messages he said showed Smith had attended. Smith denied attending that NBA game. Schmitt then accused him of lying under oath.
The report says the cited references were to the Iowa Hawkeyes, not the Atlanta Hawks. Smith had attended an Iowa–Maryland women’s college basketball game that night. It was this team-name confusion—not evidence that Smith had gone to an Atlanta Hawks game—that explains the exchange as described in the report.
Schmitt later posted, “Who knew Jack Smith was a Caitlin Clark fan?” Fox News characterized the post as an effort to defuse the controversy; criticism followed. The account is based on Fox News reporting, and no official hearing transcript or other primary record is available here to independently verify the exchange.

Why Katie Britt’s reaction became the headline image
Britt, an Alabama Republican senator seated beside Schmitt, was shown by a pool camera reacting as the mistake emerged. Fox News made that expression the defining visual of its roundup. The headline calls the moments “viral,” but the report provides no view counts, engagement figures, or other measurement showing how widely the image spread.
Other political moments in the roundup
Fox News grouped the hearing exchange with three other examples of political communication misfiring. They differ in kind and consequence: a campaign video drew selected online criticism, a senator made and corrected a verbal slip, and an advertisement prompted criticism of its portrayal.

Troy Jackson’s boba-tea campaign video
Maine Democratic Senate nominee Troy Jackson posted a video of himself sipping boba tea while criticizing wealthy interests supporting his Republican opponent. Fox News reproduced criticism from some left-leaning commentators, who described the video as ineffective or inauthentic. Those reactions are selected examples, not evidence of a representative survey or broad consensus.
John Fetterman’s verbal slip
Fox News reported that Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman briefly called himself a “lifelong Republican” and immediately corrected himself. The account presents it as an accidental verbal mistake, not a statement of his political affiliation.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s Medicaid ad
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders faced criticism over an advertisement depicting a fictional young white male Medicaid recipient named Brad as a gamer who chooses not to work. Critics alleged the ad had racial implications. That is criticism of the ad’s framing; it does not establish the governor’s intent.

- The hearing story turns on a factual mix-up: the reported references were to Iowa, not Atlanta.
- The campaign-video response is anecdotal: the quoted online criticism does not establish how voters generally reacted.
- Fetterman’s line was corrected immediately: the report describes a brief verbal slip.
- Criticism of Sanders’s ad is attributed to critics: it should not be presented as a proven motive or intent.
These episodes share a week-in-politics roundup format, but they are not equivalent controversies. The Fox News article supplies the account and examples; it does not provide independent measures of virality or primary records corroborating the hearing exchange.
