“Please give this a read” means “please read the text I’m sharing or referring to.” The word “this” depends on context: it might mean an article, document, message, or another piece of writing. The phrase is direct and conversational; “please” makes it a request.
What does “please give this a read” mean?
It is a request for someone to read something the speaker has shared or identified. A usage guide illustrates it with: “Please give this a read; it has detailed instructions for the new software update.” In that example, “this” refers to the instructions. In a message without more context, the recipient would need to look at the attachment, link, or earlier conversation to work out what “this” means.
The phrase also appears in an email reproduced in a Library of Congress-hosted book excerpt: “Hi Tim, This is what I have as of tonight—please give this a read. Thanks.” There, it refers to the material the sender has just mentioned.
What tone does it convey?
“Please give this a read” is concise and conversational. “Please” signals a request, while “give this a read” is a familiar, straightforward way to ask someone to read a text. One usage guide describes the expression as encouraging, professional, and informative. That is editorial guidance, not a rule: how it comes across can depend on the relationship, the surrounding message, and the workplace or audience.

If the material is not obvious, name it or include a link or attachment so the recipient knows what to read. For example: “Please give this draft a read before tomorrow’s meeting.”
