Dr. Becky: Why Letting Your Perfectionist Child Fail Can Build Confidence

Letting a child fail does not mean abandoning them or setting them up for hardship. Dr. Becky Kennedy’s Good Inside guidance is to stay connected while a tween faces a safe, recoverable setback, resist taking over, and help them reflect afterward. The aim is to let a child experience “that went badly” without turning it into “I am bad” or “I can’t do this”—a parenting rationale, not a guaranteed result for every child.

What Dr. Becky means by letting a child fail

Good Inside’s article, “The Importance of Letting Your Tween Fail”, is specifically about children ages eight to twelve. It does not recommend withdrawing support. Instead, a parent stays nearby and available while the child does the work of responding to a setback.

That distinction matters for perfectionist children, who may treat a mistake, disappointing result, or awkward moment as proof that they are incapable. In Good Inside’s framing, working through a manageable failure with a parent’s support can help separate a bad outcome from a judgment about the child’s worth or ability. The confidence comes from practicing recovery, not from failure automatically producing confidence.

When to step back—and when not to

Allow a natural consequence only when it is safe and proportionate. A missed bus or a project team frustrated by a child’s lack of preparation can be a learning experience; serious danger, an unreasonable penalty, or distress beyond the child’s capacity is not a useful lesson. Do not manufacture adversity to teach resilience.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Good Inside’s practical point is that a parent need not stand between a child and every safe consequence, or fix the problem immediately after it happens. Stepping back is different from leaving a child alone: stay emotionally available and make clear that you will help them think it through.

How to coach without taking over

  1. Describe what happened without blame. Stick to the facts rather than saying “I told you so.” For example: “You missed the bus, and now you’ll need to work out how to get to practice.”
  2. Make room for the child’s response. Ask a question such as, “What do you think you could do now?” Give them time to consider the problem before supplying a solution.
  3. Offer one small suggestion if they are stuck. Keep it light-touch; avoid turning a prompt into a plan you expect the child to follow.
  4. Step back and let them act. The child should do as much of the problem-solving as they reasonably can, with your support still available.
  5. Reflect after the immediate upset has passed. Ask what happened and what they might try next time. The goal is to learn, not to conduct a postmortem or assign fault.

Acknowledge feelings before problem-solving

A child who is frustrated, embarrassed, or disappointed may not be ready to hear advice. Child Mind Institute psychologist Amanda Mintzer, PsyD, recommends empathy rather than brushing off those feelings. She says, “the ability to tolerate imperfection — that something is not going exactly your way — is oftentimes more important to learn than whatever the content subject is.” The advice appears in Child Mind Institute’s “How to Help Kids Learn From Failure”, reviewed or updated September 10, 2026.

After acknowledging how the child feels, you can model your own response to disappointment and help them consider what might change next time. That approach teaches how to handle an imperfect outcome without demanding that the child stop feeling upset on command.

Match the challenge to the child

There is a difference between a stretch and an overwhelm. Child Mind Institute’s “Raising Confident, Independent Children” describes supporting challenges just beyond a child’s current comfort or skill level, with adult scaffolding and collaboration. In practice, this means offering enough help for the child to engage with a challenge while leaving room for them to try, make decisions, and learn.

Do not interpret “just beyond” as pushing a distressed child past their capacity. A bad grade, not making a hoped-for sports team, a social misstep, or a missed bus can each be a chance to practice coping, depending on the child and circumstances. None is a reason to ignore safety, dismiss distress, or insist that every setback become a lesson.

When fear of failure needs more support

Perfectionistic behavior by itself does not establish that a child has a mental health condition. But if fear of failure is so strong that a child cannot function, Child Mind Institute says therapy may be called for. A therapist can help the child practice tolerating imperfection gradually; parents do not need to force exposure or handle substantial impairment alone.
