Anger over repeated levies, limits on wages after the Black Death, and the power of local officials and the ruling elite helped draw a broad mix of people into a march on London. Richard II made concessions; the Crown later suppressed the revolt and did not preserve them. The familiar label “Peasants’ Revolt” also understates who took part—and chroniclers’ accounts make some famous details uncertain.
Why did people revolt in 1381?
The immediate spark was resistance to poll-tax collection in Essex in late May 1381. The National Archives’ notes on the 1381 poll tax identify the collection as the trigger amid government financial difficulty (The National Archives: E179).
Tax was not the whole grievance. The Black Death had reduced the population and strengthened workers’ ability to seek better pay. In 1351, the government had enacted a law intended to restrain wages; meanwhile, poll taxes imposed repeated charges on the population. The London Museum notes that the 1377 poll tax required rich and poor to pay the same amount (London Museum: How the Peasants’ Revolt rocked medieval London). For many participants, taxation sat within a wider sense that laws and authority protected the powerful at ordinary people’s expense.
How did the rising reach London?
The revolt developed rapidly from local resistance into a challenge to royal authority. A chronology of the rising records the sequence from Essex to London (1381 Online: chronology).

Who took part, and what did they want?
“Peasants’ Revolt” is a familiar name, but it can give a misleadingly narrow picture. The London Museum describes participants including tradespeople, townspeople, and ex-soldiers as well as rural people; the rising was known at the time as the Great Rising. “Rebels,” “commons,” or “participants” are often more accurate than treating every person involved as a peasant.
Wat Tyler is associated with the Kentish rebels. John Ball, a priest and preacher, gave the movement a language of social equality. The rebels’ demands included an end to serfdom and feudal services, as well as redress for grievances against officials and local authorities. The movement spread across regions, however, and it should not be treated as if every participant shared one fixed national programme (World History Encyclopedia: Peasants’ Revolt).

What is the “bloody truth” about the famous stories?
The rising was suppressed after the London confrontations. Many rebels were executed, and the concessions issued by Richard II did not become lasting rights. That outcome is clear; the precise details of speeches, motives, and some dramatic episodes are less secure.
Accounts of the revolt depend heavily on medieval chronicles. The CDAMM discussion of John Ball notes that chroniclers were hostile to Ball and the rebels, embellished details, and sometimes contradicted one another (CDAMM: John Ball and the ‘Peasants’ Revolt’). Research on news and rumor during the revolt likewise highlights divergent accounts of key episodes (Historical Research: The role of news and rumour during the Peasants’ Revolt, 1381).

The line “When Adam delved and Eve span, Who was then a gentleman?” is famously attributed to John Ball and is presented by the London Museum as part of an address at Blackheath. It captures the challenge to inherited social rank, but no contemporary recording establishes those exact words as a verbatim transcript. Crowd totals should also be treated cautiously: the surviving sources do not establish a robust figure that can be stated confidently as fact.
