5 grep Alternatives for Code Search—and When to Use Each

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For recursive searches through a codebase, rg (ripgrep) is the best default among these five options: it searches directories recursively and respects common ignore files. But no replacement does everything better than grep. Use the tool that fits your search: ugrep for archive-aware or interactive searches, ag or ack for programmer-focused workflows, and git grep for content in a Git repository. Plain grep is still a sensible choice for simple matches, portable scripts, and systems where it is already installed.

Which grep alternative should you choose?

Tool Best fit Key trade-off
rg (ripgrep) Recursive search in code repositories Skips ignored and hidden content by default; its default regex engine does not support look-around or backreferences.
ug (ugrep) Searches that need archive or compressed-file support, Unicode or multiline patterns, or an interactive query interface Offers many configurable features; choose it when those capabilities matter to your workflow.
ag (The Silver Searcher) Programmer-focused recursive text search with file-type filters Ignore rules and hidden-file options affect what is searched; performance depends on the workload.
ack Programmer-focused search using Perl regular expressions Its regex syntax and exclusion behavior differ from other tools.
git grep Searching repository content as part of a Git workflow Works within Git repositories; it is not a general-purpose filesystem searcher.

The choice is not a contest in which one command wins every task. Consider where it searches, which files it skips, what regex syntax it accepts, whether it can search archives, and whether you want an interactive interface.

1. ripgrep (rg): the default for codebases

Ripgrep searches recursively without requiring a recursive flag and respects common ignore files such as .gitignore and .ignore. That makes a command such as rg 'TODO' a practical starting point at a repository root: it avoids much generated or vendor content that would otherwise clutter results. See the ripgrep user guide for its search behavior and options.

That filtering can also explain an apparently missing match. Ripgrep skips hidden files and ignored paths by default. If you expect a result from one of those locations, inspect the relevant options in the guide and explicitly broaden the search rather than assuming the file has no match.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Know the regex trade-off

Ripgrep’s default Rust regex engine provides linear-time guarantees, but does not support look-around or backreferences. A pattern that depends on those features may need to be rewritten or run with PCRE2 using rg -P, if PCRE2 support is available in the installed build. The regex syntax reference explains the engine differences.

2. ugrep (ug): when search needs more than text files

Ugrep is worth considering when you need a more configurable search workflow: its project site advertises searching archives and compressed files, document formats, Unicode, multiline patterns, and interactive queries. Those capabilities make it a candidate for searches that go beyond ordinary source files. Check the ugrep project site for its modes and supported formats; archive and document coverage should not be assumed to match across every search utility.

3. The Silver Searcher (ag): programmer-focused recursive search

The Silver Searcher is designed for searching source trees, with file-type filters and controls for ignored or hidden files. Its manual documents output and filtering options, so it can suit a programmer who wants to narrow a search to particular kinds of files. Read the ag manual before relying on a particular default or option.

Do not choose ag on the assumption that it is always faster than grep or ripgrep. Performance depends on the files, pattern, and environment being searched; a project-reported benchmark is not a universal comparison.

4. ack: Perl regexes and explicit exclusions

Ack is another programmer-oriented search tool. Its manual documents Perl regular expressions and options for excluding content, which may fit workflows built around Perl-style patterns or intentional exclusions. Its syntax and filtering behavior are not interchangeable with ripgrep’s defaults, so consult the ack manual when translating a command or pattern.

There is no basis here for calling ack the fastest option across workloads. Choose it for the behavior and syntax you need, not for an unqualified speed claim.

5. git grep: search within a Git workflow

git grep is useful when the search target is content in a Git repository and you want the search to stay within that repository context. It is not a general filesystem searcher: for files outside a Git repository, use a tool intended to search arbitrary directories. The Silver Searcher project lists git-grep among adjacent search tools in its project documentation.

Why grep may still be the right command

For a simple line match, grep is often direct and familiar. It is also appropriate when a script depends on grep’s behavior or when working on a system where it is already available and installing another utility is inconvenient. Replacing it everywhere can add unnecessary setup or introduce differences in recursion, filtering, and regex support.

How to choose—and diagnose missing matches

  • Searching a code repository recursively: Start with rg; its recursive behavior and ignore-file handling usually reduce setup.
  • Searching archives or compressed files: Consider ug and verify that its supported formats cover the files you have.
  • Need a particular regex feature: Check the selected tool’s regex engine. For ripgrep, try -P for PCRE2 features if PCRE2 support is installed.
  • Expected a match but got none: Check whether the file is hidden, ignored, excluded by a file-type filter, or outside the tool’s search scope. Then adjust the relevant option and search again.
  • Searching repository content as part of Git work: Use git grep; use a general recursive searcher for arbitrary filesystem paths.
  • Need only a straightforward line match: Keep using grep if it already meets the need.

Speed is not a reliable basis for declaring a universal winner. Ripgrep’s FAQ reports a 5–100x advantage over GNU grep in its own benchmark comparisons, with results dependent on pattern and corpus; that is a project-reported range, not a guarantee for every search. See the ripgrep FAQ for its qualification.
