Ask a Met: Polo, Nolo and Lala—Why Do Some Pacific Storm Names Repeat Syllables?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Polo, Nolo and Lala sound like they follow the same pattern, but they do not all come from one Pacific hurricane-name list. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) places Polo on the Eastern North Pacific list, while Nolo and Lala appear on the Central North Pacific lists. Their resemblance is noticeable; WMO does not describe repeated syllables as a naming rule.

Why are tropical cyclones given names?

Names make it easier to communicate warnings and discuss and track storms, especially when several systems are active. The WMO says regional tropical-cyclone bodies establish names, with lists proposed by member National Meteorological and Hydrological Services.

WMO guidance says names are chosen with considerations such as short length, ease of pronunciation, suitability across languages and uniqueness. It also clarifies that tropical cyclones are not named after particular individuals. The guidance does not identify repeated syllables as a selection criterion.

Are Polo, Nolo and Lala on the same list?

No. The names are split across two regional systems, whose lists have different structures:

Basin Names in question How the lists are used
Eastern North Pacific Polo appears in the 2026 list. Six lists are used in rotation. WMO’s Eastern North Pacific Names page, last updated 5 May 2026, also notes that supplemental names replaced the Greek alphabet beginning in 2021.
Central North Pacific Nolo and Lala appear on the regional names page. Four lists are used sequentially: when one list ends, naming continues at the top of the next. WMO’s Central North Pacific Names page, last updated 8 December 2025.

These are separately maintained basin systems, not one Pacific-wide sequence. The WMO pages establish where the three names appear, but do not give individual etymologies for Polo, Nolo or Lala.

Is the repeated sound an official naming convention?

Not according to the published WMO guidance. Shortness and ease of pronunciation are stated considerations, but the guidance does not say names are selected to repeat syllables. Three similar-sounding examples are not evidence of a formal rule or a deliberate sound pattern.
