On January 15, 1919, a storage tank ruptured in Boston’s North End and released about 2.3 million gallons of molasses. The wave killed 21 people, injured 150 and damaged homes, businesses and elevated railway infrastructure. The company blamed sabotage, but a court-appointed auditor later attributed the disaster to structural failure and negligence. A secondary historical account reports that the company paid $628,000 in damages.
What happened in Boston’s North End?
The 50-foot tank stood near the harbor, streets and elevated railway in a busy neighborhood of workers and residents. Built in 1915 by Purity Distilling Company, it held molasses brought by ship before the product was transported to distilleries. At midday on January 15, 1919, the tank ruptured. The City of Boston records that about 2.3 million gallons poured into the surrounding streets.
The Boston Post’s January 16 report, reproduced by Mass Moments, described “A 50-foot wave of molasses—2,300,000 gallons of it—released in some manner yet unexplained” sweeping across Commercial Street and the waterfront. That account captured the uncertainty immediately after the disaster; it was not a later finding about the tank’s cause.
How many people died, and what was damaged?
The reported final toll was 21 dead and 150 injured. The fast-moving molasses struck people, damaged buildings and disrupted transport. The City of Boston says the wave traveled at about 35 miles per hour, knocked an elevated train off its tracks, crushed buildings and shifted a firehouse and other structures from their foundations.

Rescue and cleanup were difficult because molasses covered streets and debris. Boston police, cadets from the USS Nantucket and the Red Cross were among those who responded. The City account says crews pumped saltwater from the harbor to break down the molasses during cleanup.
Why did the molasses tank burst?
The tank had a history of leaks. The City of Boston says residents collected molasses dripping from it and that the company painted the tank brown to hide the seepage. The city’s account says engineers later found the walls too thin for the heavy contents and vulnerable to cracking. It also identifies a sudden temperature change and a large new shipment as contributing factors.

The Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth’s historical account says the tank was built in haste without engineering consultation or a water test, and that leaks and warnings were not addressed. These accounts describe contributing conditions; they do not establish a more precise, scientifically detailed sequence of failure.
Was the flood sabotage?
No sabotage was established as the cause. Early reports said the rupture was unexplained, and the United States Industrial Alcohol Company alleged anarchist sabotage. After an investigation, court-appointed auditor Hugh W. Ogden concluded that structural failure and inadequate attention to safety caused the disaster, assigning liability to the company. The Massachusetts historical account says his finding rejected the sabotage explanation.

What happened in the legal case?
Ogden’s 1925 report followed extensive testimony and assigned full liability to United States Industrial Alcohol Company. The New England Historical Society reports that the company paid $628,000 in damages. That payment figure is reported by the historical society; the City of Boston’s account confirms the negligence ruling but does not give the damages total.
What changed after the disaster?
Massachusetts historical sources credit the flood with contributing to tighter construction oversight and engineer-certification requirements. The City of Boston says regulatory changes included requirements for signed and sealed engineering plans and building inspections. The available accounts support describing these as changes associated with the disaster, not as a single law or a nationwide reform caused solely by it.
