Instagram removed a satirical video filmed outside Meta’s Amsterdam office after Meta reportedly classified it as bullying and harassment or intimidation. The video used Meta AI camera glasses to record employees; it is separate from Meta’s newly announced VR Glasses, a different device planned for Spring 2027 at $1,299.99 USD.
Why Instagram removed the Amsterdam video
Dutch presenter Roel Maalderink and digital-rights group Bits of Freedom filmed outside Meta’s Amsterdam office, using Meta AI camera glasses to ask employees what they thought of the glasses. Instagram removed the video in September 2026. DutchNews reported that Meta cited bullying and harassment; Bits of Freedom’s account of the removal notice says Meta alleged bullying and intimidation.
That is Meta’s reported explanation, not an independent finding that the video violated Instagram’s rules. Bits of Freedom says the employees’ faces were blurred and unrecognizable. DutchNews reported that the clip remained available on YouTube. DutchNews’ September 24 report and Bits of Freedom’s September 24 statement describe the incident from their respective reporting and publisher perspectives.
In its published statement, Bits of Freedom quoted Maalderink saying: “My jaw literally dropped here. I’ve been making satirical videos about everything for 10 years now: Gaza, Ukraine, refugees. Funny videos that provoke and spark debate. But I’ve never experienced a video being taken down before.” The statement also estimated the video had reached about half a million views across social platforms; that is the organization’s estimate, not an audited platform-wide count.

What Meta’s $1,299.99 VR Glasses are
Meta announced a separate product called Meta VR Glasses on September 23, 2026. The company says they are planned to go on sale in Spring 2027 for $1,299.99 USD. This is an announced future price and launch window, not evidence of a current retail listing.
Meta describes the device as a face-worn display weighing about 100 grams, with compute, battery and storage housed in a separate puck linked by an optical tether. The company says the glasses are five times lighter than Meta Quest 3. These are company-provided specifications and comparisons, not independently tested results.

The available reporting and Meta announcement do not establish that they are interchangeable or the same product; Meta also presents smart glasses and its Quest/VR devices as distinct product lines.

Face-recognition reporting is separate from the takedown
In June 2026, WIRED reported finding unactivated face-recognition software components, internally called NameTag, in Meta’s AI companion app for smart glasses. WIRED later reported that a subsequent app version removed those components. Meta vice president of communications Andy Stone told WIRED the feature was “purely exploratory,” adding, “No final decision has been made on what to do here, if anything.” This is earlier context about smart-glasses software; the reporting does not connect face recognition to Instagram’s removal of the Amsterdam video. WIRED’s June 8, 2026 report provides that account.
