What is the official maximum SD card size for a Nintendo 3DS?
Nintendo lists SDHC and microSDHC cards from 4 GB through 32 GB for the applicable 3DS models. Standard SD and microSD cards up to 2 GB are also listed, but 32 GB is the largest officially supported capacity. Nintendo Support states that “SDXC and microSDXC cards are not considered compatible.” Nintendo Support: SD Card Compatibility
You may see reports of people formatting larger SDXC cards as FAT32 and using them. Those reports do not establish a Nintendo-supported maximum or guarantee that a larger card will work reliably across console models and setups. If you want a card within Nintendo’s stated compatibility guidance, choose one no larger than 32 GB and in the correct card family.

The word “New” matters: a microSD card fits the New 3DS-family models directly, but original 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS systems use a full-size SD card unless you put the microSD card in an SD adapter. What can the 3DS store on the card?
Nintendo says downloaded software other than DSiWare is saved to the SD card; use of the card for other data depends on the software. Its listed content-count limits are up to 300 software titles, 180 sound files, 3,000 photos, and 3,000 music files. These are count limits, not a promise that a particular number of games will fit: the space each title uses varies.
For music, Nintendo lists a limit of up to 100 music files per folder and up to 1,000 folders. Nintendo Support: SD Card Use

How to move 3DS data to a larger card
- Turn off the system and remove the current SD or microSD card.
- Connect the old card to a computer using its SD slot or a suitable card reader/writer.
- Copy every folder from the old card to a location on the computer. Do not erase or reuse the old card before the copy is complete.
- Insert the new, empty card into the computer and copy all the folders onto it.
- Safely eject the card, put it in the console, and check that the system recognizes the stored data.
Nintendo’s illustrated transfer instructions use Windows 10 as their example, but the essential operation is copying all folders from the old card to the new one. A separate reader/writer is only needed if the computer has no suitable way to connect the card. Nintendo Support: Transferring Data Between SD Cards
Data from separate cards cannot simply be combined into one card by copying both sets of folders. Nintendo warns against continuing to use duplicate copied data as a second active copy. Treat the transfer as moving a card’s data, not merging multiple libraries.

Which card should you buy?
- Original 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS: choose a 32 GB SDHC card, or a 32 GB microSDHC card plus a full-size SD adapter.
- New 3DS, New 3DS XL, or New 2DS XL: choose a 32 GB microSDHC card.
- Computer lacks an SD slot: use a compatible card reader/writer for the transfer.
