When developers threatened the landmark with demolition in 1969, local volunteers raised money to move it to city-owned land. It survives as a public attraction, though the widely reported figure of 42,267 tours in 2023 comes from a secondary source, not a published official attendance record.
Why is there a giant elephant in Margate?
Philadelphia builder James V. Lafferty created Lucy as a real-estate spectacle. The official history says the structure was meant to attract prospective buyers to South Atlantic City, as Margate was then known; a nearby railroad helped bring visitors. Its original name was the Elephant Bazaar. Lucy is six stories high and weighs ninety tons, according to the New Jersey Historic Trust.
Lafferty sold the attraction to Anton Gertzen in 1887. In 1902, Anton’s wife, Sophia, renamed it Lucy and turned it into a tavern. Lafferty designed three elephant-shaped structures, but Lucy is the only one still intact; the others were called the Light of Asia and the Elephantine Colossus.
How did volunteers save Lucy from demolition?
By 1969, the land under Lucy was being sold to developers, and demolition threatened the deteriorating structure. Community members organized to preserve it and raised funds to move it to city-owned property a few blocks away. Lucy was relocated in 1970 and reopened to the public in 1974, after twelve years closed. In 1976, it received National Historic Landmark designation.

Its survival was not a one-time rescue. The New Jersey Historic Trust records multiple grants to the Save Lucy Committee, including awards of $182,390 in 1992, $305,190 in 1995, $20,400 in 2019, $673,668 in 2020 and $669,133 in 2022. These are separate awards listed by year, not a single project total; the state record does not establish that they funded identical work.
What restoration has Lucy needed?
Lucy’s coastal location makes upkeep an ongoing preservation challenge. A 2023 event page by preservation professionals says a project completed in December 2022 replaced the deteriorated exterior metal skin with Monel (Nickel 400), alongside wood repairs and repainting. That material detail is reported by the event page, not specified in the state grant record.

The New Jersey Historic Trust separately says more than 25,000 visitors come to the landmark annually, without identifying a measurement year or describing that figure as guided tours. Visitors and tours are different measures; the available accounts do not define the counting methods or show how they relate.
