President Donald Trump said he felt badly for the people New York Attorney General Letitia James was investigating because, in his view, they “won’t get a fair shake.” He made the remark after reports that Gov. Kathy Hochul had assigned James to lead or oversee an investigation into sexual-assault allegations involving seven men and a Cornell fraternity. Trump’s statement was a criticism of James, not proof that she is biased or that the allegations are true.
What Trump said about the Cornell investigation
Trump criticized James after news outlets reported that she had been assigned a role in the investigation. Hindustan Times reported on October 3, 2026, that Trump characterized James as corrupt and said the people she investigated would not receive an impartial result. The Independent reported the previous day that Hochul had appointed James to lead the investigation into allegations connected to a Cornell fraternity. Hindustan Times · The Independent
According to the reports, Trump said: “I feel bad for whoever she’s looking at because they won’t get a fair shake.” AOL’s syndicated account dates the exchange to October 2 at the White House, where Trump was responding to a question from Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy. These are reported remarks; the sources reviewed did not include an official transcript or video of the exchange. AOL
Why Trump argued they would not be treated fairly
Trump’s stated rationale was his own allegation that James was corrupt and would not treat people under her investigation fairly. That claim reflects Trump’s view. The reporting cited here does not independently substantiate bias by James or establish that the investigation would be unfair.

What is known—and not established—about the allegations
The reports describe allegations of sexual assault involving seven men and a Cornell fraternity. They do not establish that an assault occurred as an adjudicated fact, identify the men, say whether charges have been filed, or establish anyone’s guilt. “Cornell 7” is a news-media shorthand, not an official case name verified in the reporting reviewed.
The Independent describes Hochul as appointing James to lead the investigation, while other coverage says James was assigned to lead or oversee it. The reports cited here do not provide the official assignment document or a complete account of James’s legal mandate, so the precise scope of her role cannot be confirmed from them.

Who assigned James to the matter?
News accounts attribute the assignment to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. BizPac Review reproduced a statement attributed to Hochul saying, “The young woman at the center of this case deserves to know that every fact will be examined and justice pursued.” Because that wording is reported by a partisan commentary and news site, it should be treated as an attributed quotation rather than an independently verified primary statement.
