One-Click Payments in the UK: How They Work for Merchants

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For UK merchants, “one-click payment” usually describes a returning-customer checkout that offers an eligible saved payment method or prefilled details. It does not guarantee that a purchase takes literally one action: the customer may still need to confirm the order or complete authentication.

What “one-click payment” means for a merchant

“One-click payments” is a checkout description, not a single formal payment category established by the FCA or the provider documentation cited here. In practice, a merchant lets a returning customer use a saved payment method or eligible prefilled details instead of entering payment information again.

A typical saved-card flow works like this:

  1. The customer enters payment details at checkout through the merchant’s payment provider.
  2. If the customer chooses or agrees to save the method for a clearly explained future use, the provider associates it with the customer according to the integration’s configuration.
  3. On a later visit, the checkout may present an eligible saved method or prefill some details.
  4. The customer confirms the purchase. The provider processes it and requests authentication if required.

Stripe documents one example: Checkout can prefill details from saved cards for existing customers when the required configuration and data conditions are met. That is a provider-specific behavior, not a guarantee about every checkout or payment method (Stripe: Payments for existing customers).

Saving a method does not mean unlimited permission to charge it

Make clear what the customer is agreeing to save and how the method is intended to be used later. Collect consent appropriate to that use and retain evidence of the agreement. Saving a card for a customer-initiated return checkout is not, by itself, unrestricted permission to charge it later.

Payment providers distinguish between “on-session” payments, where the customer is present in the checkout, and “off-session” attempts, made when the customer is not actively checking out. These terms describe the customer’s presence, not a promise that a payment will be frictionless. A returning on-session payment can still require authentication; an off-session payment has its own eligibility and agreement considerations. Stripe’s guidance describes these distinctions and says merchants remain responsible for applicable laws, regulations and network rules (Stripe: Save payment details during an in-app payment).

Why UK strong customer authentication still matters

The FCA says strong customer authentication (SCA) can apply when a payer initiates an electronic payment, accesses a payment account online, or performs a remote action that may imply fraud risk, unless an exemption applies. A saved payment method does not automatically remove those requirements. The FCA also says firms should make authentication usable for different customer groups, including by considering methods that do not depend on a mobile phone (FCA: Strong Customer Authentication).

SCA generally uses at least two independent elements from three categories: knowledge (something the customer knows), possession (something the customer has) and inherence (something the customer is). Authentication when accessing account information does not necessarily satisfy authentication at the point a payment is initiated. These explanations appear in the FCA’s May 2026 Approach document, which the FCA publications index identifies as a draft, not final guidance. Treat it as explanatory draft material and check current final FCA materials and rules before implementation (FCA: Payment Services and Electronic Money – Our Approach, May 2026 draft; FCA: Electronic money and payment services – key publications).

Where the merchant’s regulatory role ends

A business that simply accepts a debit or credit card for its own goods or services generally is not itself providing the card payment service; its acquirer enables that service. The FCA Handbook puts it this way: “In our view, the simple act of accepting payment by way of debit card or credit card for supply of your own goods or services does not generally amount to the provision of the service of execution of payment transactions through a payment card.” (FCA Handbook, PERG 15.3, Q18.)

Technical processing or storage, terminals and online gateways alone do not constitute acquiring, according to the FCA Handbook (FCA Handbook, PERG 15.3). The name of a gateway or software provider therefore does not settle who provides the regulated payment service.

That general distinction is not a ruling on every business model. If a marketplace or other operator handles or passes customer funds, provides acquiring, or initiates bank payments, its contracts and actual fund flows may raise separate regulatory questions. The applicable framework includes the Payment Services Regulations 2017 and related UK technical standards (FCA: Payment Services Regulations 2017 and Electronic Money Regulations 2011).

How to compare saved-payment implementations

Assess the complete customer journey and the merchant-provider arrangement, rather than choosing on the promise of a literal one-click checkout.

  • Consent and control: Does checkout explain what will be saved and its intended future use? Can the customer make an informed choice, and can you retain evidence of the agreement?
  • Authentication and recovery: Can the provider handle payments that require SCA instead of promising that every transaction will be frictionless? Is there an accessible alternative for a customer who cannot or does not use a mobile phone?
  • Saved-method display and prefill: Which eligible methods can appear for returning customers? What account data and configuration are required? Can customers manage their saved methods? Stripe’s Checkout documentation describes conditions for its own card-prefill behavior; other providers may work differently (Stripe: Payments for existing customers).
  • Integration fit: Does the flow fit your ecommerce platform and customer-account model? Which payment methods are supported, and are future payments expected while the customer is present or absent? The right technical approach depends on the provider and integration.
  • Responsibilities: Identify which party is the merchant, acquirer and payment service provider in your actual arrangement. Do not infer regulatory status from a “gateway” label alone.

The cited sources do not establish an independent conversion lift, a current provider price comparison or a neutral vendor ranking. Do not treat a shorter checkout as proof of a particular business outcome without evidence for your own implementation.
