Aberystwyth does not have a blanket ban on drinking alcohol. Ceredigion County Council’s Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) applies only to specified, mapped public areas. Drinking there is not, by itself, an offence; the offence is failing without reasonable excuse to comply with an officer’s request to stop drinking or surrender alcohol.
What Aberystwyth’s “booze ban” means
The restriction is a PSPO made under sections 59, 63, 67 and 68 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. It is not a prohibition on alcohol throughout the town, nor does simply holding or drinking alcohol in a covered area automatically break the order.
Ceredigion County Council’s public guidance says: “However, it is an offence to fail to comply with a request made by the police to cease drinking or to surrender alcohol, without reasonable excuse.” The council says a breach may result in arrest and a fine of up to £500.
Where the order applies—and what is excluded
The order covers the public places specified in its schedule and map, rather than every street or venue in Aberystwyth. The council describes public places broadly, including streets, pavements, grassed areas, pedestrian and seating areas, parks and car parks. Check the official Aberystwyth order and map for the defined boundary.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The council’s guidance excludes places where drinking is authorised by licence, such as pubs and clubs, as well as premises covered by a Temporary Event Notice. The PSPO is therefore not a ban on drinking inside those authorised premises.
When the order began and how long it lasts
Ceredigion County Council says the alcohol-consumption orders for designated areas of Aberystwyth, Cardigan and Lampeter began on October 20, 2017. They were renewed in 2020 and again in 2023. The council lists the current orders as continuing through October 19, 2026; its 2024–2027 Community Safety Strategy also describes the extension as lasting until 2026.

The published material cited here does not establish whether a successor order is in force after October 19, 2026. Anyone checking the rule after that date should confirm the latest position with the council rather than assume the existing order continued unchanged.
Why the council introduced the restriction
In the 2017 order, the council said it considered public drinking and intoxication associated with anti-social behaviour, crime, harassment and intimidation, and concluded that the activity had a detrimental effect on local quality of life. That is the council’s stated rationale, not independent proof that the order reduced those problems.

A report published by Flyingeze on October 3, 2026, says residents supported extending the restrictions and quotes students describing unwanted attention and feeling unsafe around groups drinking in public. These are reported personal accounts, not findings from a representative survey.

The report attributes the phrase “wild west” to Alun Williams, councillor for Aberystwyth Morfa a Glais. It quotes him describing “drunk men” as “dominating the centre of Aberystwyth” and creating a “wild west intimidating atmosphere.” Those words are Williams’s characterization as quoted in the report, not an official finding that the town centre is a no-go area.
The report also describes the local police commander as calling recorded incidents where alcohol contributed “a relatively low number.” It does not provide the count, time period, definition or comparison behind that description. The available sources do not establish the scale of such incidents across town or show, through before-and-after figures, that the PSPO caused a reduction.
