The report showed only 29,000 jobs added, well below the forecasts cited by Reuters and Charles Schwab. Traders interpreted the weak hiring and downward revisions to earlier payrolls as reducing pressure for an aggressive near-term Federal Reserve rate increase. That was a market reaction—not a Fed decision—and the available figures describe the immediate move, not the day’s closing yield.
What the September jobs report said
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 29,000 in September 2026, while the unemployment rate was 4.2%. The release was published on October 2. The BLS employment report also revised July payroll growth from 21,000 to a 10,000 decline and August growth from 162,000 to 133,000. Together, those revisions lowered the two earlier monthly estimates by 60,000.
Forecasts differed by source: Reuters said economists in its poll expected 90,000 jobs, while Charles Schwab cited an 84,000 consensus. Against either estimate, September’s 29,000 increase was a substantial miss. Those figures should be read as separate polls, not as a single definitive forecast.
The headline was weak, but other signals were mixed
The unemployment rate remained at 4.2%. Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% in September and were up 3.0% over 12 months, according to the BLS. Schwab also noted that household-survey employment increased by 406,000. The payroll survey and household survey measure employment differently, so these readings need not move together.

The BLS notes that payroll estimates are revised as additional business and government data arrive and seasonal factors are recalculated. Reuters reported economists’ view that seasonal adjustment associated with a late Labor Day may have contributed to the weak September figure and the August revision; that was their interpretation, not a BLS conclusion.
How far the 10-year yield fell
Reuters reported that the 10-year Treasury yield dropped six basis points to 5.176% after the release. Another immediate post-release account put the move from 5.230% to 5.170%. Schwab’s October 2 market-open update, timestamped 9:13 a.m. ET, showed 5.18%, down five basis points. The readings are consistent with a roughly six-basis-point intraday drop, allowing for timing and rounding differences.

These are event-time and market-open observations, not evidence of where the yield finished the day or whether the decline lasted. The 10-year yield reflects trading in a longer-term Treasury security; it should not be confused with the two-year yield, which is a different maturity and can reflect near-term rate expectations more directly.
Why weaker payrolls pushed yields lower
Treasury yields move as investors buy and sell bonds. When a jobs report is weaker than expected, traders may infer that demand and wage pressure are less likely to force the Federal Reserve to raise rates aggressively in the near term. That can support Treasury prices and pull yields down. The larger-than-expected downward revisions added to the impression that labor-market momentum was softer than earlier estimates suggested.

Reuters described a retreat in rate-hike expectations after the report, and a market participant cited the data as support for an October pause. Schwab likewise framed softer labor data as easing pressure for further tightening. These were interpretations of market pricing and commentary, not a commitment or announcement by the Federal Reserve. The move also followed a week of elevated yields, so the report was one input among several affecting Treasury prices.

The immediate yield drop indicates that traders reassessed the likelihood or timing of further rate increases; it does not establish what the Fed will do. A single employment release is not a policy decision, and the mixed indicators in the report leave room for different readings of labor-market conditions. The figures above establish the market’s immediate response after the report, but do not show that yields stayed lower or specify the closing level.
