Sergio Garcia has not been confirmed to have left LIV Golf. On September 30, 2026, Garcia and Even Par LLC filed a motion in LIV Golf’s Chapter 11 case asking the court to explicitly terminate his player participation agreement—or allow him to terminate it himself. The filing is a request, not a ruling, and the available sources do not establish that Garcia is already free to sign elsewhere.
What Garcia asked the court to do
The motion seeks an unambiguous end to Garcia’s player participation agreement with LIV Golf. It asks the bankruptcy court either to terminate the agreement or to permit Garcia to do so himself. Why rejection in bankruptcy is not the same as termination
Garcia’s filing turns on a legal distinction: rejecting an executory contract in bankruptcy constitutes a breach, but does not necessarily terminate the contract. His lawyers therefore seek a specific termination ruling or permission for Garcia to terminate the agreement, rather than relying on rejection or the league’s restructuring to end it by implication.
The practical concern raised in the motion is that an unresolved agreement could make other parties cautious. Garcia’s attorneys argue that tournament organizers, sponsors, and other counterparties may hesitate to work with him if he cannot represent that he is free of competing contractual commitments. They also contend that termination would fit LIV’s position that the agreement is “not part of (LIV Golf’s) go-forward business plan.” These are arguments made in the filing, not findings by the court. What is—and is not—known about Garcia’s status
- Known: Garcia and Even Par LLC filed a motion seeking termination or permission for Garcia to terminate his LIV agreement.
- Not established: The available sources do not show that the judge granted the motion or confirmed that Garcia is free to sign with another tour or organization.
- Important distinction: Filing a request is not the same as winning it, and the motion itself does not prove that Garcia has already left LIV.
How Garcia’s filing fits LIV Golf’s restructuring
LIV says it is winding down “LIV 1.0” as part of a court-supervised Chapter 11 restructuring and pursuing a transaction for the league’s next phase. The league says it intends to resume global team competition in 2027 under new ownership, subject to court and relevant stakeholder approval. It has not announced definitive decisions on a 2027 schedule or individual events. Those are LIV’s stated intentions, not confirmed outcomes. LIV has also described possible changes for the next phase, including fields of 75 players, a cut, and additional entry routes such as Monday qualifiers. Those remain plans subject to the restructuring process; they do not establish Garcia’s future participation or resolve his contract request.
