HIVE Underwriters appointed Richard Brown as Head of Property to lead the launch of its global Property Direct & Facultative (D&F) business, the company announced on 28 September 2026. Brown is expected to build a new underwriting team and develop the portfolio; HIVE has not yet specified its underwriting appetite, capacity, terms or submission timing.

According to HIVE, Brown most recently served as Head of UK and International Property at Sompo and has more than 30 years of UK and international property insurance experience. The company says his remit at HIVE includes building the new team and establishing broker relationships.
What does Property D&F mean for HIVE?
Direct and Facultative (D&F) describes property insurance written directly for a specific insured or risk, rather than through a treaty covering a portfolio of policies. HIVE’s announcement identifies the planned business as global Property D&F, but does not set out particular territories, insured risks or policy terms.

HIVE describes itself as a multi-class specialty MGA and Lloyd’s Coverholder. Its current listed classes include aviation, marine, war, political violence and terrorism, and space. HIVE says the property business will combine specialist underwriting expertise, advanced analytics and proprietary technology. It has named disciplined risk selection, long-term partnerships and sustainable portfolio performance as goals. These are the company’s stated plans, not reported performance results for a portfolio that is still being launched.

CEO Bruce Carman said Brown’s property expertise and experience building teams made him well placed to develop the new class. Brown said he intends to build a team with technical expertise, responsive service and strong broker relationships, using market experience and better information to support brokers.

The announcement does not state the new business’s capacity providers, limits, detailed risk appetite, policy terms, target premium volume or when brokers can begin submitting risks. The word “global” describes HIVE’s intended portfolio; it does not, on its own, establish a specific underwriting footprint or availability in every market.
