Brise-soleil—architectural screens, fins, canopies or louvres placed outside a building—can do that while giving a façade a distinctive look. The right design depends on the sun’s angle, façade orientation, window, climate and how much winter sun the room should receive; a deeper screen is not automatically better.
How to choose a brise-soleil that suits your home
External shading intercepts solar radiation before it passes through the glass. New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment describes it as the best-performing shading option for reducing heat gain, while New Zealand Building Performance notes that glazing treatments are less effective than external shading. That does not make one screen suitable for every window: the sun’s path and the needs of the room determine the form.
- Start with orientation and sun angle. Horizontal overhangs can help block high-angle sun. East- and west-facing windows receive lower-angle sun, which may pass beneath an overhang; vertical fins, adjustable louvres or another orientation-specific approach may work better. The Scottish Government’s non-domestic building guidance specifically cautions against relying on horizontal devices for east- and west-facing façades.
- Balance summer shade with winter access. A screen that blocks summer sun may also reduce useful winter solar gain. Consider seasonal sun angles rather than maximizing shade year-round.
- Protect daylight and views. Slats and fins can filter rather than eliminate daylight, but their depth, spacing and direction affect how much light and outward visibility remain.
- Account for operation and upkeep. Adjustable devices offer more control, but exterior moving parts need maintenance and can affect views. Fixed screens are simpler to operate but cannot adapt as conditions change.
- Plan the whole cooling strategy. Shading is one part of managing overheating. Historic England advises combining it with night cooling or ventilation where appropriate. Attachment, wind exposure and local planning requirements also need attention.
10 brise-soleil ideas to adapt
These are design approaches, not a list of ten verified buildings or measured performance results. Their appearance can be adapted to a project, but the geometry should be checked for the site’s sun path, glazing and intended seasonal use.
1. Deep horizontal overhang
A projecting roof edge or canopy gives a façade a clean horizontal line and can shade high-angle sun. Check how far the sun drops in the seasons when shade is needed: an overhang that is too deep may also block desired winter sun or reduce daylight.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Horizontal louvre band
Rows of horizontal blades create a regular façade rhythm. Fixed blades provide a consistent filter; adjustable blades allow the angle to change. Blade depth, spacing and orientation shape both sun control and the amount of view through the screen.
3. Vertical fins
A sequence of vertical blades adds depth and shadow to a façade. It can be a useful direction to investigate for lower-angle sun, particularly on east- or west-facing windows, where a horizontal overhang alone may not provide enough protection.

4. Wraparound screen with changing louvre direction
At a corner, continue the screen around the building and change the louvre orientation to suit each exposure. New Zealand’s passive-solar guidance describes louvre direction changing around a façade. The idea needs site-specific checking: the sun angles and window conditions on one elevation may differ substantially from those on the next.
5. Adjustable exterior louvres
Movable external louvres let occupants alter shade and daylight as conditions change. They offer more control than a fixed screen, but moving exterior devices bring maintenance needs and may interrupt outward views. Confirm that the mechanism and attachment suit the location and exposure.

6. Deep pergola
A pergola can form a shaded transition outside the window or across a terrace, with filtered light beneath its slats. YourHome, an Australian Government resource, identifies deep pergolas among approaches that can work on east- and west-facing façades. Their effectiveness still depends on the specific geometry and orientation.
7. Timber-batten screen
Closely spaced timber battens bring warmth and texture while establishing a strong façade pattern. Battens can filter light, but their appearance alone says little about performance: spacing, depth and direction determine how much sun is blocked, and the design should be matched to the window’s exposure.

8. Bespoke screen made from repurposed elements
Historic England documents a bespoke brise-soleil made from repurposed theatre barn-door lights over a glazed southwest-facing façade. It is a visual example of turning an unusual material into architectural shading, not evidence of quantified energy performance. For any bespoke screen, assess attachment, durability, wind exposure and the resulting light and view.
9. Light shelf paired with exterior shade
A light shelf can block direct sun while reflecting daylight from its upper surface toward the ceiling and deeper into a room, according to New Zealand’s passive-solar guidance. It is a way to consider sun control and daylight together rather than treating them as competing goals; its placement must suit the window and interior.

10. Shading integrated with ventilation
Design the screen as part of a broader approach to keeping rooms comfortable, rather than expecting it to solve overheating alone. Historic England recommends pairing solar shading with night cooling or ventilation. Whether those measures are practical depends on the building and site.

| Approach | Sun response | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Deep horizontal overhang | Most directly suited to higher-angle sun; assess winter sun and lower-angle exposure. | Fixed shade; depth can affect daylight and seasonal solar access. |
| Horizontal louvres | Blade angle and spacing can be tuned to the exposure. | Can be fixed or adjustable; moving blades add maintenance and may affect views. |
| Vertical fins | Can help address lower-angle sun, especially on east and west façades. | Fixed elements; check their effect on outward views and daylight. |
| Deep pergola | Can provide filtered shade; Australian Government guidance includes deep pergolas among east- and west-façade approaches. | Creates a layered outdoor threshold; site geometry determines the result. |
| Light shelf with shade | Can block direct sun and redirect daylight deeper into a room. | Requires coordination with the window and interior; not a substitute for orientation-specific design. |
| Shading with ventilation | Pairs solar control with a way to release heat. | Depends on whether night cooling or ventilation is suitable for the building. |
The cited guidance establishes design considerations, not comparative costs or quantified energy savings for these options. For a real project, compare orientation and exposure, summer shade versus winter access, daylight and views, fixed versus adjustable control, materials and upkeep, structural attachment and wind exposure, ventilation, and local planning rules. An architect or shading specialist can assess the sun path and details for the actual site.
