Solar panels still generate electricity in winter, but a household’s monthly production can fall as days get shorter and cloud, snow or ice reduces the sunlight reaching the modules. Cold weather can help panels produce more efficiently during a sunny hour; it does not make up for fewer productive hours or guarantee a bill-free winter.
Why winter production can fall even when panels work efficiently
Shorter days mean less time to generate
Solar generation depends on available sunlight. Winter’s shorter daylight period can reduce the hours in which a system produces power, and local cloud cover can reduce the sunlight reaching the panels further. That can lower total monthly kilowatt-hours (kWh) even when the system is operating normally.
Cold helps per sunny hour, not necessarily per month
The U.S. Department of Energy says that “PV modules operate more efficiently in colder weather, as temperatures above 77°F cause decreases in voltage.” That temperature benefit applies to panel performance under the conditions when sunlight is available. It does not mean a winter month will produce more energy overall than a summer month.
Snow and ice can block the modules
Snow on a panel obstructs sunlight and can reduce or stop production while it remains. A tilted array may shed snow, but how quickly it clears depends on the system and conditions; ice and heavy accumulation can create additional operating and structural challenges. The Department of Energy notes that winter weather can limit PV power production. DOE winter-weather guidance and EnergySage’s winter solar explainer describe these effects.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What published performance figures do—and don’t—say about your home
A National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) analysis published in 2021 examined 250 photovoltaic systems with a combined 157 MWdc of capacity. Across that fleet, winter performance averaged 5%–10% below summer performance, which the report said was likely due to snowfall. In months with nonzero snowfall, losses varied by climate from 6% to 40%. These are fleet findings, not a forecast for an individual home: the snowfall-month range in particular should not be treated as a universal household loss. NREL’s 2021 fleet analysis provides the study context.
A separate NREL case study illustrates how different a local winter can be. In Ruby, Alaska, a rooftop system produced no electricity in midwinter while snow-covered; reported 2022 production began after the snow melted in April and continued approximately until October. That is an example of one system in one climate, not a general seasonal schedule for other homeowners. The NREL report describes the case.

How to tell whether your winter pattern is expected
- Look at monthly energy, not just peak power or the bill. Use your inverter or monitoring app to find monthly production in kWh. A bill also reflects household use, utility charges, credits and the rate plan, so it is not a direct measure of panel output.
- Compare like months where possible. Compare the same month across multiple years and note snow cover, cloudier-than-usual weather, shading, outages or changes to the system. A single winter month is not enough to establish an equipment problem.
- Check a location-specific modeled estimate. Enter your location and the system details you know in PVWatts. The calculator uses historical weather and reports an estimated output range based on 30 years of weather data; the range represents possible year-to-year variability for the model’s assumptions, not a promise of actual production. Its snow-loss default assumes either that there is no snow on the array or that it is kept clear, so consider whether that assumption fits your situation. The Department of Energy homeowner’s guide also points homeowners to PVWatts for estimating production.
- Escalate persistent or flagged problems. If production remains unexpectedly low after the panels are clear, or monitoring shows an inverter or equipment warning, contact your installer or equipment provider. Winter seasonality alone does not establish that equipment has failed.
If snow is staying on the panels
Some homeowners consider a purpose-made solar-panel snow rake when snow is not sliding off promptly. Treat that as a conditional option, not a requirement: follow the panel manufacturer’s and installer’s guidance, and do not climb onto a roof to clear panels. Snow and ice add safety risks, and the Department of Energy discusses winter hazards without endorsing a consumer clearing tool. EnergySage also describes snow behavior and clearing considerations in its winter solar guide.
