Spoilers for Colleen Hoover’s Verity. The novel does not conclusively verify either Verity’s manuscript or her letter. Readers are left to weigh two competing accounts through Lowen’s point of view; the most defensible answer is to treat the ending as unresolved, not as a confirmed confession or exoneration.
What are the two competing accounts?
Lowen, a writer hired to continue Verity Crawford’s bestselling series, discovers an unfinished autobiographical manuscript among Verity’s papers. The publisher’s synopsis establishes the setup, while The Washington Post’s spoiler analysis describes the manuscript as apparently confessing terrible acts.
The manuscript portrays Verity as having violent urges and an obsessive attachment to her husband, Jeremy. Verity’s later letter disputes that account: she says the manuscript was a writing exercise in which she adopted the perspective of an evil character, using a technique described as “antagonistic journaling.” That explanation gives readers another way to understand the document, but it is still Verity’s own retrospective account—not independent confirmation.
How should you weigh the manuscript and letter?
Neither document has independent corroboration in the sources available. The manuscript is a text Lowen finds, not an omniscient record; the letter is Verity’s explanation, not proof that the manuscript was fictional. Compare what each account explains, what it leaves uncertain, and what earlier scenes you would need to reinterpret to accept it.

A detail may support the manuscript reading, or the letter may ask readers to reinterpret a scene. Those are arguments for an interpretation, not proof of one.
Does Colleen Hoover’s comment settle what happened?
No. In a Goodreads Q&A, Hoover wrote, “I wrote the book from Lowen’s pov.” That identifies the novel’s point-of-view character; it does not confirm whether Verity’s manuscript is truthful or whether her letter is.

The cited response therefore does not establish a definitive author-intended answer. It is safer to distinguish the book’s narrated perspective from the truth of the competing documents.
Does the collector’s edition change the ending?
Hoover’s official book listing describes a collector’s hardcover with an exclusive new chapter. The listing establishes that the edition includes extra material, but does not explain whether it changes how the ending should be interpreted. If discussing that chapter, identify the edition and avoid treating its effect on the ending as established without checking the text.

What is a useful book-club question?
Ask which account explains more of the details Lowen encounters—and what assumptions a reader must make to accept it. Halifax Public Libraries’ May 2022 book-club kit also confirms the novel’s usefulness for group discussion. Keep the conversation grounded in the distinction between what the text shows, what either document claims, and what readers infer.
