Building a football formation tool is not mainly a matter of drawing a pitch. The harder work is making player positions keep their shape as the pitch resizes, choosing how formations are represented, and ensuring that moving players works on touchscreens as well as with a mouse. Sam’s account of building Toolsyte’s Football Formation Builder shows how those details shape a small browser tool.
How do you keep player positions in place as the pitch resizes?
Fixed pixel positions can look right at one width and drift relative to the field when the pitch becomes narrower. Sam’s solution was to treat the pitch as its own coordinate space and position players proportionally, using relative coordinates such as percentages. The pitch can then change size while the formation retains its basic shape.
Those coordinates are for display in the browser, not measurements of real distances on a football field. A simplified 4-3-3, for example, can describe a goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards by assigning each a role and an x/y position within the pitch.
Why separate formation data from the pitch?
The pitch can handle rendering while formation data supplies the initial positions and roles. With that separation, a new formation can be added as another set of coordinates rather than as a separate layout implementation. The same display logic can draw different starting arrangements.

This also makes presets easier to understand and adjust. A formation label is not a complete tactical blueprint: teams may stagger a 4-3-3 midfield differently, while wide attackers or wing-backs can have different roles in other formations. Presets are starting points, not uniquely correct arrangements. Users should be able to move players to suit the setup they have in mind.
What changes when players drag markers on a phone?
Sam found desktop mouse dragging reasonably straightforward, but phone use raised two practical issues: small markers were harder to grab with a finger, and a drag could be mistaken for a page scroll. One useful design distinction is between what a marker looks like and how large its interaction area is. A compact visible marker can still have a more forgiving touch target.

Touch input also needs to be considered alongside browser scrolling; simply making a marker draggable does not ensure that moving it feels predictable. The source account describes the problem but does not specify a particular technical implementation, so it does not establish one universal event-handling solution.
What makes the whole interface responsive?
A responsive tool needs more than a pitch that shrinks. Controls may need to wrap onto additional lines, labels must stay readable, and pitch height has to balance formation clarity against the amount of scrolling required on a phone. As Sam puts it, “A layout can be technically responsive and still be unpleasant to use.”

Sam reports checking the interface at multiple widths and looking for awkward points. The account does not give viewport dimensions, devices, participant counts or formal usability results, so it should be read as a developer’s experience rather than a quantified test.
How much functionality should a formation builder include?
The central task was intentionally limited: open a page, choose a formation and arrange a team. Potential additions included player photos, custom colours, substitutes, tactical arrows, team logos, alternate pitch styles, saved formations and exports. Each could be useful, but adding them all would also make a small tool more complex. A practical scope check is whether a feature helps users choose a formation or arrange their team without obscuring those actions.

Sam built the Football Formation Builder with plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. For this project’s responsibilities—rendering the pitch, loading formations, displaying players, handling interactions and adapting the interface—the author valued being able to inspect coordinates and CSS directly. That is a context-specific choice, not a general argument against frameworks: applications with more state, shared components or complex data flows may benefit from one.

A formation tool’s visible pitch is only the beginning. The underlying coordinate system determines whether layouts scale; separating data from rendering makes presets easier to extend; touch targets and scrolling affect whether placement works on phones; and responsive controls matter as much as the field itself. Sam’s account does not offer measured usability outcomes, but it makes clear why even a deliberately small browser tool involves decisions its users should not have to think about.
