Microsoft Planner can turn a large project into assigned, trackable tasks, but it is not a single $50 product. Microsoft’s US pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists several options: some Planner features are included with eligible Microsoft 365 subscriptions, while paid plans start at $10 per user per month when billed yearly. The right choice depends on whether you need basic task coordination, premium timelines and dependencies, or portfolio and resource management.
How Microsoft Planner breaks a project into manageable work
Planner organizes a project as tasks that a team can arrange, assign, and follow. Microsoft describes the product as supporting basic templates, Teams integration, and Grid, Board, Schedule, and Charts views. Those views let a team work with the same tasks in different formats, rather than treating the project as one long checklist.
For a complicated project, the practical planning model is to break the outcome into tasks, assign responsibility, organize the work, and monitor progress in the view that suits the team. If the work has sequencing constraints, premium plans add dependencies and a Timeline (Gantt) view. Microsoft describes these capabilities, but the cited product material does not establish how well they perform in a particular team’s workflow.
Microsoft calls Planner “a powerful tool for teams across departments,” not only project managers. That is Microsoft’s product-page wording, rather than an independent evaluation.

Planner plans and listed US prices
The following prices and distinctions come from Microsoft’s US comparison page accessed October 3, 2026. Paid prices are per user per month with annual billing, and paid subscriptions auto-renew. Microsoft says prices may change; taxes and licensing eligibility may also affect what a customer pays.
| Offering | Listed US price and billing | What Microsoft lists |
|---|---|---|
| Planner in Microsoft 365 | Included with eligible Microsoft 365 plans | Task management, templates, Teams and web access, and Grid, Board, Schedule, and Charts views |
| Planner Plan 1 | $10 per user per month, billed yearly | Premium plans, task dependencies, backlogs and sprints, Timeline (Gantt), and project goals |
| Planner and Project Plan 3 | $30 per user per month, billed yearly | Plan 1 features, advanced dependencies and project-management capabilities, plus Project desktop and Project Online as listed by Microsoft |
| Planner and Project Plan 5 | $55 per user per month, billed yearly | Plan 3 capabilities plus advanced portfolio management and enterprise resource management and allocation |
The listed prices are not a one-time $50 purchase. In particular, Microsoft lists Plan 5 at $55 per user per month with yearly billing—not $50. The title’s dollar figure does not identify a particular Planner tier or market.

Which Planner option fits your project?
Choose included Planner for task coordination
If your Microsoft 365 subscription already includes Planner, start by checking that access before buying another license. The included capabilities cover task management, templates, collaboration through Teams or the web, and multiple task views. Microsoft’s comparison makes inclusion dependent on the Microsoft 365 plan, so do not assume every subscription includes the same features.
Choose Plan 1 when the project needs sequencing
Plan 1 is the listed threshold for premium planning features such as task dependencies and Timeline (Gantt). Microsoft also lists backlogs, sprints, and project goals at this level. It is the relevant tier to examine when tasks need to be ordered or mapped to a timeline, rather than merely assigned and tracked.

Consider Plan 5 for portfolios and resource allocation
Plan 5 is aimed at needs beyond coordinating a single project: Microsoft associates it with advanced portfolio management and enterprise resource management and allocation. Its listed US price is $55 per user per month on annual billing.

Check licensing and feature needs before paying
- Check your existing Microsoft 365 plan. Confirm whether it includes Planner and which capabilities your organization has licensed.
- List the features the project actually needs. Basic task assignment and views may be enough; dependencies, Gantt-style timelines, goals, backlogs, or sprints point toward Plan 1.
- Assess whether you need Project applications. Project desktop or Project Online, as listed by Microsoft, are reasons to compare Plan 3.
- Assess portfolio and resource needs. If you need advanced portfolio management or enterprise resource allocation, compare Plan 5 rather than assuming a lower tier covers them.
- Confirm current regional pricing and terms. The figures here are Microsoft’s US prices accessed October 3, 2026, and paid plans are shown with annual billing and auto-renewal.
What the “$50 Microsoft tool” description gets wrong
Microsoft Planner is a software subscription family, not a physical tool or a single $50 license. The amount in the title should not be used to infer a plan: Microsoft’s cited US pricing lists Plan 1 at $10, Plan 3 at $30, and Plan 5 at $55 per user per month, each billed yearly. Prices and feature availability can vary by market, subscription eligibility, and future changes to Microsoft’s offering.
Microsoft’s Plan 3 product page also uses preview wording for Copilot. Treat preview status as a qualification, not a guarantee that a Copilot feature is generally available or included for every license; verify the current licensing and availability details with Microsoft before relying on it.
