Could Colossal’s Artificial Egg Bring Back a Bird Extinct for 600 Years?

Colossal’s system has reportedly hatched chickens, not a moa. An incubation platform is only one part of the much larger scientific and ethical challenge.

Not by itself. Colossal Biosciences says its artificial egg system has hatched chickens, a result that may help address one obstacle in its bird de-extinction ambitions. It has not hatched a moa or shown that restoring a moa is now feasible. The system addresses incubation after fertilization; genetics, reproduction, animal welfare and ecological questions remain.

What Colossal has demonstrated

On May 19, 2026, Colossal announced that 26 chickens had hatched using its artificial egg system. The company describes a silicone-based membrane held by a lattice or rigid cup. It says the membrane permits gas exchange while retaining moisture, and that the system worked without supplemental oxygen. These are company-reported claims, not results established in a peer-reviewed publication. Colossal’s announcement and National Geographic’s account describe the result.

The process began with real, fertilized chicken eggs. According to National Geographic, researchers opened the eggs, transferred their contents into the artificial shell structure and added calcium. The system therefore replaced the shell environment during development; it did not create an embryo or replace every biological component of an egg. Some independent experts consider “artificial eggshell” or “shell-less incubation system” more precise terms.

Colossal says the design can work with standard incubators and be adapted to different sizes. The available reporting does not establish performance with other bird species or egg sizes. National Geographic also reports that the company had not released hatch rates that would allow comparison with earlier methods. The figure of 26 is a company-announced hatch count, not a hatch rate.

Why a moa would be a different challenge

The South Island giant moa, Dinornis robustus, was a New Zealand bird extinct by the mid-15th century, according to Science Media Centre New Zealand. “600 years” is a rounded description, not an exact extinction date.

Colossal estimates that a moa egg was about 80 times the volume of a chicken egg and about eight times that of an emu egg, as reported in its announcement and news coverage. Those are company estimates, not settled measurements. The scale points to an engineering problem: a living bird could not simply lay an egg large enough for a moa-sized embryo. But making a larger incubation structure would address capacity only, not the other requirements for producing a viable bird.

More than incubation is required

A moa-like animal would require a suitable living relative, reconstructed genetic material and a way to produce genetically altered birds. Researchers would also need to show that resulting animals can develop and remain healthy. The sources describe these as unfinished challenges. And a bird engineered from a living relative would be a proxy, not the original extinct species restored. As Philip Seddon, Professor Emeritus in the University of Otago’s Department of Zoology, put it: “Genetic modification of a near relative of the moa could create an ecological proxy, but could not resurrect a moa.” Science Media Centre New Zealand published his assessment.

What the technology might mean for conservation

Researchers and commentators point to possible uses such as rescuing compromised embryos, supporting captive breeding where natural eggs or surrogates are scarce, and providing access to developing embryos for study. These are potential applications, not demonstrated conservation outcomes for endangered species in the available reporting.

Nic Rawlence, Associate Professor and Director of the Ancient Ecology Lab at the University of Otago, called the work “really impressive” and said it could become a tool in conservation. He also noted that the announcement had no associated data or peer-reviewed publication. His comments were published by Science Media Centre New Zealand.

What a successful hatch would—and would not—show

A hatch demonstrates that development reached that stage under the reported conditions. It does not, on its own, show how reliably the system works, whether it can support species with different eggs, or whether a bird produced through genetic engineering would thrive. No independent comparative hatch-rate figure or peer-reviewed performance dataset was available in the cited reporting.

There are also questions beyond technical success. Any resulting bird would be a sentient animal with welfare needs. A hatch would not prove that it could live well, or that releasing it into a changed ecosystem would be appropriate. Dusko Ilic, Professor of Stem Cell Sciences at King’s College London, said recreating an extinct species would require accurate genome reconstruction as well as appropriate development, physiology, behaviour, welfare and ecological context; even then, the outcome would likely be an engineered proxy. His comments underscore why an incubation milestone cannot settle those questions. Science Media Centre New Zealand’s experts also note social and iwi opposition to the moa project, alongside welfare and ecological considerations. Their discussion presents these as concerns to weigh, not as a technical result.
