Why EJ Archield started against Liberty
Archield started because regular quarterback Nick Minicucci was unavailable with a leg injury, according to pregame reporting from RotoWire. That report also said Archield was warming up with the starters.
It was a first college game for the sophomore. Delaware’s official roster biography says he did not see game action in 2025. His 2024 high-school senior season at Gaither High School in Tampa, Florida, included 2,448 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, a .602 completion percentage, 300 rushing yards and seven rushing scores. Those are high-school statistics, not college results.

Delaware’s official game recap and season statistics record the same line for Archield: 10 completions on 19 attempts, 137 passing yards, no passing touchdowns and no interceptions. The season statistics list his completion rate as 52.63%. With one college appearance in the statistics at the time, that percentage describes this game alone; it is not a meaningful measure of his ability over time.

The figures are the passing totals listed in Delaware’s recap. They show different outputs in limited game appearances, but the raw lines alone do not establish which quarterback played better: the quarterbacks entered in different circumstances and the table does not account for play context.
What happened after the halftime change
Archield played the first half, and Streeter started the second half; Bell also entered, according to postgame accounts from Underdog Dynasty and Philly College Sports. Delaware did not score until the fourth quarter. Streeter threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Lewis, and Bell connected with Matthew McKinley-Daniels for a 27-yard touchdown before adding a two-point conversion on a rush. Liberty won 30–14, according to the official recap.

Philly College Sports reported Delaware had 188 yards of offense in the first half—59 rushing and 129 passing—while Liberty held the ball for 20:30. Those are team totals, not Archield’s individual statistics, and they help describe the conditions around the switch without assigning the team’s first-half output to one player.

In practical terms, Delaware made a quarterback change at halftime and Archield did not return. Head coach Ryan Carty was quoted by Underdog Dynasty as saying, “We needed a spark.” That explains the stated aim of the substitution, not a specific technical flaw or mistake by Archield.

The reported statistics and game sequence establish that Delaware’s offense had not scored before the fourth quarter and that the team changed quarterbacks.
