Apple has not announced an M6 iMac. As of an August 2026 report, Apple was expected to update its 24-inch all-in-one with an M6 chip and new colors before the end of the year, but those details remain reporting—not confirmed specifications. Here are five upgrades worth wanting, set against what is actually known about the current M4 iMac and the reported refresh.
First, what is actually known about the iMac M6?
MacRumors reported in August 2026, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, that Apple was preparing an updated 24-inch iMac with an M6 chip and new colors, expected before the end of 2026. The report said the colors were not yet known and that major design changes were not expected. Those are forecasts, not an Apple announcement. MacRumors’ August 2026 report
A July 2026 report had said the available reporting did not establish whether the next chip would be M5 or M6. It also described OLED as a possibility further in the future, not an imminent iMac feature. Rumors can shift; neither a release date nor an OLED screen is confirmed. MacRumors’ July 2026 report
1. I want a meaningful M6 performance gain
A newer chip is the most obvious reason to refresh the iMac, but no M6 performance figures have been announced. Apple’s M4 launch announcement said that M4 iMac was up to 1.7 times faster for daily productivity and up to 2.1 times faster for demanding workflows such as photo editing and gaming, compared with iMac with M1. Those are Apple’s M4-era claims against that specific older model—not independent test results and not a forecast for M6. Apple’s October 2024 M4 iMac announcement

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
My hope for M6 is straightforward: a noticeable improvement for everyday work and sustained creative tasks, without relying on a headline chip name to imply a particular speed. Until Apple publishes model-specific performance information, buyers cannot know whether an M6 iMac would be a worthwhile upgrade from an M4.
2. I want a better screen—or at least a clear path to one
The current iMac has a 24-inch-class 4.5K Retina display: Apple specifies 4480 by 2520 pixels, 218 pixels per inch, 500 nits, P3 wide color, and True Tone. Its actual diagonal measurement is 23.5 inches, and nano-texture glass is an available configuration. Apple’s current iMac specifications

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
I would welcome a larger or more advanced display, especially if it improved the experience for people who edit photos or keep several windows open. But the cited August report does not point to a major redesign, and the July report places OLED further out. There is no evidence here that the expected refresh will change the screen size or technology.
3. I want fresh colors without losing the iMac’s approachable design
Color is the one visual change specifically mentioned in the August reporting, although the new shades have not been identified. Apple’s M4-era iMac colors are blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and silver. Apple’s M4 iMac technical specifications

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

My wish is for colors that feel genuinely distinct while keeping the clean all-in-one look. That is an editorial preference, not a prediction about Apple’s palette. The report suggests new colors, not a redesigned chassis.
4. I want ports and monitor support that fit real desks
The current M4 iMac’s connectivity depends on the configuration. Apple’s specifications distinguish a two-port version, which supports one external display up to 6K at 60Hz, from a four-port version, which supports either two external displays up to 6K at 60Hz or one up to 8K at 60Hz. - Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
I would like Apple to make the more capable setup easier to choose and to preserve flexible external-display support. But there is no confirmed M6 port count or monitor limit. Do not assume the M4 configurations will carry over unchanged.

Apple’s October 2024 announcement set the M4 iMac’s US starting price at $1,299 at launch, with availability beginning November 8, 2024. That is historical launch pricing, not a current quote. In July 2026, MacRumors reported a US starting price of $1,499 following price increases across Macs; check Apple’s live store for the current price in your region. My hope is that a new generation delivers enough improvement to justify its price rather than merely replacing the current model at a higher entry point. Until Apple announces the product and its price, value is impossible to judge directly.
What should you do: buy an M4 iMac or wait?
The M4 iMac is a real, specified product; the M6 remains an unannounced possibility. Decide based on whether the current machine meets your needs now, rather than treating the rumored chip or colors as guaranteed.
Quick Recap
- Consider the M4 now if you need an all-in-one soon and its display, performance, and configuration options meet your requirements. Confirm current pricing and regional availability with Apple.
- Consider waiting if you can comfortably defer a purchase and would rather see whether Apple announces a refresh. The reported timing is not a confirmed launch date.
- Compare configurations carefully if external monitors matter: the M4’s two-port and four-port versions have different supported display setups.
- Do not buy on an OLED expectation unless Apple announces one; current reporting describes it only as a future possibility.
