FluentSMTP connects WordPress to an email-sending service; it does not create SPF or DKIM records. Those records belong in the authoritative DNS zone for your domain, and the email provider supplies the exact values. First identify every service that sends mail as your domain, then publish the provider’s DNS records and test an actual message.
How do I set up SPF and DKIM for FluentSMTP?
Use this sequence: identify the sender, locate the active DNS zone, update SPF without creating a second policy, publish the sending provider’s DKIM record, add DMARC cautiously, configure FluentSMTP, and inspect a message sent to an external mailbox. The records and connection settings depend on your email provider; a UK web-hosting account does not imply that the host controls DNS or supplies the same settings as another host.
- Identify every sender. List the systems that send using your domain, such as WordPress, a hosted mailbox, or a transactional email service. Include all legitimate senders before editing SPF.
- Find authoritative DNS. Check the domain’s nameservers and identify the active DNS provider. The registrar, web host, and DNS provider may be different companies. Make changes in the active zone, not simply the control panel that is easiest to find.
- Inspect and update SPF. Find the existing SPF TXT record first. Maintain one SPF policy for the domain and merge authorized senders using each provider’s instructions; do not add a competing SPF record or replace a working policy blindly. GOV.UK guidance says SPF should cover all sending systems and uses a minimum soft-fail qualifier in its government email context: GOV.UK email security and anti-spoofing guidance.
- Publish the provider’s DKIM record. In the sending provider’s dashboard, retrieve the selector and exact record type and value. A selector owner often looks like
selector._domainkey, but use the provider’s supplied name and value exactly. Providers may require TXT or CNAME records. Then use the provider’s verification control. GOV.UK explains the selector format and record options in its email security guidance. - Add DMARC cautiously. Create the provider-appropriate TXT record at
_dmarc. Where senders have not yet been verified, start with monitoring usingp=none, review reports, and confirm legitimate mail authenticates and aligns before considering quarantine or reject. GOV.UK describes this staged approach for government administration; its mandatory requirements and reporting examples do not automatically apply to a private UK website. Do not copy a government reporting address into your record. See GOV.UK’s DMARC guidance. - Configure FluentSMTP. Prefer the sending provider’s native API connection if FluentSMTP offers one for that service. Otherwise choose Other SMTP and enter the actual SMTP hostname, port, encryption, username, and password or app password specified by your provider. FluentSMTP lists 465 with SSL and 587 with TLS as typical settings, but provider instructions take precedence. Use a From address on a domain the provider permits: FluentSMTP SMTP configuration guidance.
- Send and inspect a real test. Send a message to an external mailbox. Open its original source or authentication details and check
Authentication-Resultsforspf=pass,dkim=pass, anddmarc=pass. A successful connection test only shows that FluentSMTP reached the sending endpoint; it does not prove DNS authentication passed or that the message avoided spam.
Where do I add SPF and DKIM records?
Add them to the authoritative DNS zone for the domain, which may be operated by the registrar, web host, or a separate DNS provider. FluentSMTP is a WordPress mail connection plugin, not the DNS editor or source of provider-specific record values. The sending service supplies the values; whoever manages the active DNS zone publishes them.
For each record, preserve the exact host/name, record type, and value supplied by the sending provider. Check whether the provider expects the full domain name or a relative host label in its DNS interface; DNS panels differ. If the provider cannot verify a record, re-check the nameservers, record type, selector/name, and value before changing anything else. DNS visibility is not immediate on a guaranteed timetable: FluentSMTP’s June 30, 2026 guide says some changes appear in minutes and others take several hours. Use the provider’s verification control and an authoritative DNS lookup rather than relying on a fixed wait: FluentSMTP’s SPF, DKIM, and DMARC setup guide.

Does FluentSMTP set up SPF automatically?
No. FluentSMTP does not publish SPF or DKIM DNS records. SPF authorizes sending systems, so the domain’s existing policy must account for every legitimate sender. DKIM depends on a provider-generated selector and key or CNAME, and the sending provider must sign the message. A DKIM record in DNS alone does not prove that a message was signed.
GOV.UK’s official guidance says, “Consider using a separate subdomain for third party email services to simplify SPF and DKIM implementation.” That is an option to consider when designing mail streams, not a reason to move an existing service without planning. Government requirements in the same guidance are scoped to government email services, not automatically to every private UK website: GOV.UK email security and anti-spoofing guidance.

How do I configure FluentSMTP on my UK hosting account?
Choose the sending path your host or email provider actually supports. A hosting account’s UK location does not determine its DNS control, outbound SMTP access, DKIM capability, or the settings required by FluentSMTP.
| Sending path | When it can work | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Host mailbox over SMTP | The host provides authenticated SMTP settings and permits sending for your domain. | Hostname, port, encryption, credentials or app-password requirement, outbound port restrictions, and whether the host signs mail with DKIM. |
| Transactional service via native API | FluentSMTP supports a native connection for the service and the service authorizes your domain. | Domain verification, SPF/DKIM instructions, sending limits, logs, and the service’s requirements for the From address. |
| Other SMTP provider | The provider supplies SMTP access and permits the intended WordPress mail. | Exact SMTP endpoint and credentials, TLS settings, egress restrictions, and authentication records for the domain. |
Use the existing host mailbox if it meets these requirements. If the host disables PHP mail, blocks the required SMTP connection, or cannot provide DKIM signing and suitable records, use a supported API service or another authorized SMTP provider. FluentSMTP says native API connections are more reliable when available and recommends a dedicated service to help maximize deliverability; that is product guidance, not comparative testing or a guarantee of inbox placement. Provider performance and prices are not established here, so compare the options against your volume and support needs rather than assuming one is best. See FluentSMTP’s configuration guidance and FluentSMTP’s overview of transactional email services.

How can I tell whether authentication worked?
Inspect a message delivered to an external mailbox, not just FluentSMTP’s connection test. Look for SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results in the recipient’s message source or authentication details. A passing result is useful evidence for that message and route; it does not guarantee inbox placement. If the message is authenticated but lands in spam, check the provider’s logs and whether the From domain aligns with the authenticated domain.
If you configure multiple FluentSMTP connections, routing depends on the message’s From address. Messages that match no configured connection use Default; Fallback is used if the send operation fails. It does not retry simply because a message landed in spam. FluentSMTP documents this behavior here: Primary and fallback connections.

What should I check if FluentSMTP fails?
- Connection timeout: Confirm the SMTP hostname and port, and ask the host whether outbound port 25 is blocked. FluentSMTP notes that many hosts block outbound 25 and suggests using the provider’s documented 587 or 465 settings where applicable: SMTP configuration guidance.
- Authentication failure: Re-check the username and password, including whether the host requires an app password.
- SSL/TLS error: Match the encryption mode to the selected port and the provider’s explicit instructions; do not assume every port uses the same mode.
- DNS verification failure: Make sure you edited the authoritative zone, used the exact record type and host/name, and copied the provider’s value precisely. Check whether it expects TXT or CNAME, then allow for DNS visibility delay.
- Mail sends but goes to spam: Inspect SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and alignment; verify the From address is authorized and review provider logs. A Fallback connection does not correct spam placement.
Does the UK guidance apply to every website?
GOV.UK’s record guidance is useful for understanding SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, but its “must” statements and implementation requirements apply to government email administration. Its separate protective-domain example uses v=spf1 -all and a rejecting DMARC policy for a domain that sends no mail; that is not an appropriate recipe for a domain used by WordPress or another legitimate mail system. Consider subdomains carefully if some services send from them: GOV.UK guidance for domains that do not send email.
GOV.UK also discusses MTA-STS, TLS reporting, and transport encryption requirements. These are related email-security topics, not extra FluentSMTP SPF/DKIM setup steps that every small business must implement. Apply requirements relevant to your organisation and services rather than treating government policy as universal private-sector law.
