A homicide classification is a medical examiner’s conclusion about the circumstances and cause of death. It is not, by itself, a criminal conviction or proof that a particular person committed a crime. The article said the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office was evaluating whether to file charges; it did not establish that prosecutors later made a decision.

According to the report, the Department of Family and Children’s Services found concerns raised since 2023 to be unfounded or inconclusive. The article also describes a dependency-court petition concerning Aurora. She died before a hearing scheduled for May 18, 2026. Hanson disputed allegations of neglect and malnutrition. She said she had limited control over the home because it belonged to her father. She also said social workers provided pest foggers and roach traps, but they did not work. The report presents her account alongside the descriptions from social workers and police.

Mount Pleasant school district superintendent Elida MacArthur called for a “full and independent examination of what happened, how the system failed Aurora, and why the concerns raised on her behalf did not lead to the intervention she needed.” She also said, “Our staff did everything within their power to sound the alarm.” These are MacArthur’s criticisms and calls for review.
