Young stars’ disks lose planet-building gas through outflows, and a new analysis of 72 systems suggests the leading signatures change as the disks age. That matters most for gas giants: they need substantial gas to build their massive atmospheres, so disk dispersal limits the opportunity. The study describes an evolutionary pattern—not a universal countdown or a directly observed deadline for any individual planet.
What the JWST study found
Led by Naman Bajaj, the 2026 study analyzed archival observations from the James Webb Space Telescope’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), examining 72 young, mostly Class II disks viewed at an angle. Rather than following any one disk over time, the researchers compared snapshots of different systems. The University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory describes the study and its interpretation.
The team looked for emission from molecular hydrogen and ionized neon, which act as tracers of gas motion and the conditions in the outflow. In the SETI Institute’s 2026 summary, extended emission from one or both tracers was reported in 66 of the 72 disks. Conical molecular-hydrogen winds were identified in 46 systems, and fast-moving neon jets in 40. Those counts describe detected signatures; they do not measure how much gas each disk has lost.
How the gas escapes—and how the pattern changes
Earlier: magnetic jets and broader winds
The reported early-stage picture features outflows consistent with magnetic fields threading the disk. Neon initially traces fast jets, while molecular hydrogen reveals wider winds. These flows carry gas away from the planet-forming disk.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Later: a greater role for radiation-driven winds
As a disk thins, high-energy radiation from its star can heat gas until it escapes. This process is called photoevaporation. The reports describe slower, broader photoevaporative flow becoming more important as magnetic jets and winds weaken; atomic and radiation-driven winds have a greater role in the later-stage picture.
This is a change in which outflow signatures appear more prominent, not a precisely dated handover. The mechanisms need not switch off one by one, and the study does not establish a fixed transition age that applies to every system.

Why disk dispersal matters for making planets
Planets form in disks of gas and dust around young stars. Gas is particularly important for gas giants such as Jupiter, which must gather massive atmospheres while that material remains available. Outflows remove some of the same raw material from which planets can grow, so planet formation and disk dispersal overlap.
For context, the University of Arizona report says the young solar system’s disk contained roughly 100 times more gas than dust during its first few million years. That is contextual reporting about the early solar system, not a measurement of the 72 disks in the study.

Bajaj’s “race against time” phrase captures this competition between building gas-rich planets and losing disk gas. It should not be read as a claim that JWST watched planets form, that every gas giant has the same formation deadline, or that the survey measured an exact lifetime for making one.

- Total gas removed: Counts of detected hydrogen and neon signatures do not give the total mass carried away by the outflows.
- Where the gas launches: The observations do not settle exactly where in the disk the different flows begin.
- A universal timetable: Because the sample compares systems at different stages rather than tracking one disk throughout its evolution, it supports an age-related interpretation, not a single clock for every planetary system.
The institutional reports identify measuring how much gas winds remove over time and locating where the gas launches as questions for further study.
