Across different places and periods, enormous remains could be treated as evidence of giants, monsters, or saints. The shift toward identifying them as the remains of extinct animals came much later, through gradual and contested anatomical study.
What did medieval people think fossils were?
There was no single medieval theory of fossils. In the account published by Live Science on 3 October 2026, large bones and fossil ivory were interpreted through familiar religious and legendary ideas. Some accounts connected giant remains to giants or monsters, including beings associated with Noah’s flood. In some places, mammoth teeth or vertebrae were revered as saints’ relics.
In Siberia, the enormous fossil tusks could be called unicorn horns or dragon tusks. These descriptions show how people made sense of striking objects before vertebrate paleontology existed; they do not mean that every community, or everyone who encountered such a tusk, believed the same thing.
Were mammoth tusks the same as the “unicorn horns” kept in Europe?
No. The historical label “unicorn horn” could refer to different objects. Siberian fossil tusks were associated with unicorns in some accounts, while narwhal tusks were another important source of objects believed to be unicorn horns in Europe. Those narwhal tusks appeared in church and elite collections; the Metropolitan Museum of Art records examples associated with Saint-Denis and San Marco, and says such objects were safeguarded in churches from London to Cracow.

The narwhal’s Arctic habitat also meant it was little known in medieval Europe, helping the tusk remain mysterious. The Met records that Lorenzo de’ Medici’s collection valued its “unicorn horn” at 6,000 florins when he died in 1492. That is a historical valuation, not a modern equivalent or price comparison.
Why did people believe in unicorn horns?
Unicorn belief drew on more than fossil finds. Traditional texts and travelers’ reports described the creature, while unusual objects presented as physical proof lent those stories credibility. In a 1563 passage quoted by the Museum Barberini, naturalist Conrad Gessner argued: “Therefore, credence must be given to what travelers and distant sojourners say: for the animal is indeed on earth, otherwise none of the horns would exist.” This was Gessner’s reasoning, not a settled scientific conclusion. By the sixteenth century, some scientists had begun to suspect that supposed unicorn horns were narwhal tusks.

The supposed horn, often called alicorn, was also credited with healing powers and the ability to detect poison. These were historical beliefs, not demonstrated medical properties. Brown University Library’s account of the medieval unicorn places such lore within bestiaries, which mixed accounts of real and mythical animals and presented nature as a route to religious understanding.
How did anatomical explanations develop?
Recognizing that a large bone belonged to an animal rather than a giant did not immediately settle what kind of animal it was. The Live Science account describes a dispute at Langon, France, in which anatomist Riolan argued in 1613 that large bones presented as remains of giant Teutons were elephant bones. Physicians and anatomists debated with barber-surgeons; explanations included a possible hoax as well as biblical giants. The controversy ended in 1618 without resolution, and giant-human explanations persisted for much of the following two centuries.

Extinction posed a further challenge. If divine providence placed every creature within a connected order, the disappearance of a kind of animal could seem impossible. The account traces a changing debate: Buffon considered that mammoths and the American “incognitum” had perished, while Georges Cuvier used comparative anatomy to identify extinct animals and help establish vertebrate paleontology. This was a gradual change in interpretation, not an overnight conversion from legend to science.

There was no single date when everyone accepted mammoth extinction. Earlier interpretations and anatomical proposals competed with older explanations, and even the Langon debate remained unresolved in 1618. By the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, comparative anatomy offered a more systematic way to identify extinct animals. Buffon’s consideration of vanished species and Cuvier’s comparative work mark stages in that longer shift, rather than one decisive moment at which all earlier beliefs disappeared.
