Changing formatting in a document already open is a separate action, and Word for the web does not retain every setting as a default for the next new document.
Choose whether to change this document or future documents
Formatting a document changes only that file unless you explicitly save a setting as a default or edit a template. Microsoft says the Normal template contains default styles and customizations that determine the basic look of documents, and changes to it affect documents created in the future. For font and line spacing, desktop Word offers a “Set as Default” choice with an option to apply changes to all documents based on Normal. Select that broader scope when you want future blank documents to inherit the setting; choosing the current document does not change the default for other files. Menu wording can vary by Word version, operating system, or display language. The font instructions cited here cover Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016–2024 on Windows and Mac; follow the labels shown in your own edition.
Change the default font
- In desktop Word, open the Home tab and open the Font dialog (the small dialog-box launcher in the Font group).
- Choose the font family, style, size, and other options you want for new text.
- Select Set As Default.
- Choose All documents based on the Normal template to apply the choice to future documents, or choose the current-document option if you only want this file changed. Confirm the selection.
If the font reverts, Microsoft identifies Normal.dotm permissions and add-ins as possible causes. Check whether the template is read-only and whether your account can write to it; on a managed work computer, an administrator may control those permissions. Set default line and paragraph spacing
Microsoft describes desktop Word’s default line spacing as 1.15, with a blank line after paragraphs and space above headings. To adjust line spacing or paragraph gaps for documents based on Normal:
- Go to Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing > Line Spacing Options.
- In the Paragraph dialog, set the line-spacing option and the Before and After paragraph spacing values as needed. These controls affect different things: line spacing sets the distance between lines within a paragraph; before/after spacing sets the gap around paragraphs.
- Select Set As Default, then choose All documents based on the Normal template and confirm.
These steps describe desktop Word. Microsoft says Word for the web reverts to 1.15 line spacing when a new document is created, so a spacing adjustment there should not be treated as a persistent default for future web documents. Change page margins
Microsoft’s margin guidance says Word pages automatically use one-inch margins. To change margins in the document you are editing, use Layout > Margins and select a preset or choose custom margins. The margin menu is a direct way to format that file; for a lasting default in desktop Word, use the template route described below. Microsoft’s page on default settings notes that Word for the web returns to one-inch margins for the next new document after a margin change.
See Microsoft’s margin instructions and its default settings guidance. The latter is marked for Word 2019 for Mac, so treat its description of template scope and web behavior as guidance rather than assuming its older Mac menu labels match every version.

Use Normal.dotm for broader desktop defaults
Normal.dotm can hold more than a font choice: Microsoft describes defaults for text, paragraph and document formatting, styles, text, pictures, AutoText entries, and keyboard shortcuts. To edit it, open the template from within Word rather than treating it as an ordinary document:
- Use File > Open in desktop Word.
- Navigate to the location where Word stores user templates and open Normal.dotm. The exact folder depends on the operating system and installation.
- Make the formatting or customization changes, then save the template.
Because Normal.dotm governs future blank documents, a change there has a wider effect than formatting one file. Back it up before substantial customization. Microsoft says that if Normal.dotm is renamed, damaged, or moved, Word creates a fresh copy with original defaults; customizations in the displaced copy are not carried over. Other templates do not have the same automatic recreation behavior, so keep a backup of those too. Read Microsoft’s Normal.dotm documentation for its guidance on editing and recovery.

Use a separate template for recurring document types
If you want a specific starting layout for reports, letters, or business plans without changing every blank document, save that format as its own template. Microsoft describes templates as reusable starting points that can define page layout, fonts, margins, and styles. This keeps a special-purpose format separate from the general defaults in Normal.dotm.
Microsoft’s instructions are at Save a Word document as a template. Back up a custom template before making significant changes, since Word does not automatically recreate non-Normal templates if they are moved or damaged.

What to expect in Word for the web
Do not assume a setting changed in the browser will become the default for every new document. Microsoft specifically says that new web documents revert to 1.15 line spacing and one-inch margins. For persistent defaults across new blank documents, use desktop Word and its Normal-template controls; use a separate template when the desired formatting applies only to a recurring document type.
