Officers searched the bag and found several fraudulent IDs, according to the report. It does not explain why the alarm sounded, and the incident does not mean Xbox consoles are prohibited.
What happened at LaGuardia?
In a report published September 22, 2026, Yahoo News Malaysia republished PEOPLE’s account of the incident. It says TSA officer Ashley Leo was remotely monitoring a screening area when a passenger’s Xbox set off an alarm. The bag was diverted for a search.
TSA supervisory officer Christopher Ramos reportedly found a plastic bag containing “several fake IDs.” The report quotes Ramos saying: “I noticed various driver’s licenses with different dates of birth and different class types, but all with the same photograph.” It says some of the IDs appeared to use a photograph of musician Tyler, the Creator. What happened to the passenger?
According to the report, Ramos contacted a TSA manager, the LaGuardia TSA Coordination Center, Port Authority Police and a TSA inspector. Port Authority Police reportedly confirmed the IDs were fraudulent. The passenger was located and arrested shortly before boarding.

The report does not name the passenger or specify charges, motive, or the later legal outcome. It attributes the incident details to a TSA press release, but the account available here does not establish those details through an independently retrieved primary-source release.
Why did the Xbox trigger an alarm?
The reason is not known from the report. It does not identify the console model or explain what triggered the alarm; the discovery of IDs afterward does not establish that the Xbox itself caused concern or that the items were connected.

TSA’s general guidance says an item may receive additional screening if it triggers an alarm, appears tampered with or raises other security concerns—even when the item is generally permitted. That guidance explains why an alarm can lead to a bag search; it does not establish why this particular bag alarmed or make Xbox consoles prohibited. TSA Travel Tips

TSA says travelers age 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint and provides a list of acceptable forms. That checkpoint requirement is separate from the report’s account of the IDs in the bag: the report does not establish why the passenger had them or what they were intended for. LaGuardia’s Federal Security Director John Essig is quoted in the report describing the purpose of identification checks: “It helps ensure that people entering secure areas of the airport are who they claim to be and supports the safety of the traveling public.”
