For photographers and video makers who want to shape a shot themselves, the iPhone 18 Pro’s Pro Controls may be its most useful camera upgrade. Tom’s Guide reviewer says the breadth of the new manual controls mattered more in use than variable aperture—an individual judgment, not a universal verdict. Variable aperture is still notable new Main-camera hardware; Pro Controls is the wider set of choices Apple brings into its Camera app.
What is the best camera feature on the iPhone 18 Pro?
Pro Controls is the feature this comparison favors if you value direct control over a capture. Apple’s Camera app adds manual options for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, plus a histogram; Tom’s Guide also describes manual focus and other settings in its account of using the interface. Apple lists Pro Controls for both photo and video capture.
That breadth helps explain why Tom’s Guide’s writer preferred Pro Controls after using the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It does not establish that every owner will prefer it: someone who mainly points and shoots may care more about automatic results than adjusting capture settings.

- Aperture: Choose among the Main camera’s available aperture settings.
- Shutter speed: Set how long the camera exposes an image.
- White balance: Adjust the color balance of the capture.

These adjustments are available for photo and video capture, according to Apple’s specifications. They are most useful to people who want to influence how a shot is made rather than rely solely on the camera’s automatic choices.
What variable aperture does—and what it does not
Variable aperture is a physical feature of the iPhone 18 Pro’s 48MP Fusion Main camera, not a software substitute for Pro Controls. Apple specifies four aperture settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. A six-blade mechanism changes the aperture to affect how much light reaches the sensor and the depth of field.

Apple says the camera can select an aperture automatically according to lighting and depth-of-field needs, or creators can choose one of the four settings manually in the Camera app. Developers can also use an Apple API for aperture control in their own apps.
In practical terms, automatic aperture favors convenience, while choosing an aperture yourself offers more say over light and background focus. That control is limited to the Main camera’s physical aperture mechanism; it does not mean every lens has a variable aperture.

Apple says the new Main camera and imaging pipeline improve low-light photography and detail in group photos. Those are manufacturer claims; the cited coverage does not provide an independent controlled test establishing the size of the improvement or comparing the two features head to head.
How Pro Controls fit into the wider camera system
The iPhone 18 Pro’s camera story extends beyond its Main camera. Apple’s specifications list a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera with a 13 mm focal length, ƒ/2.2 aperture and 120-degree field of view, alongside a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera at 100 mm (4x) with an ƒ/2.8 aperture. Apple also lists 8x optical-quality telephoto framing at 200 mm, 48MP macro photography, ProRAW and 4K Dolby Vision video.

Those capabilities serve different framing and capture needs. Pro Controls is the more broadly useful headline for someone who wants to make decisions while shooting; variable aperture remains a distinct hardware capability for the Main camera.

A Cinco Días / Smartlife report published October 2, 2026 says Halide Mark III version 3.2 adds finer aperture adjustment across the iPhone 18 Pro’s physical range, with aperture-priority and manual modes. That is secondary reporting; the report alone does not establish the app’s current release status, device support or exact behavior. Check with the developer before relying on those details.
