Check whether your Dell laptop supports SupportAssist OS Recovery
SupportAssist OS Recovery is available only on selected Dell systems that shipped with factory-installed Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is not included on every Dell laptop. Dell’s general guidance excludes Qualcomm-processor systems and recommends Windows Push-Button Reset as the initial reinstall route for those computers.
Look up your model on Dell’s support site and check the SupportAssist OS Recovery Support Matrix before following model-specific recovery directions. Feature availability and the options shown can differ by model and recovery-image condition.
Open SupportAssist OS Recovery from the F12 menu
- Power on or restart the laptop.
- When the Dell logo appears, tap F12 repeatedly to open the one-time boot menu.
- Select SupportAssist OS Recovery and press Enter. If Windows starts instead, restart and try tapping F12 earlier.
On some computers, the recovery environment may launch automatically after repeated unsuccessful attempts to start Windows. Dell’s support matrix and your model’s support page are the best checks if the option is absent.

Run diagnostics and try repair before resetting
Use the hardware scan when it is available, and note any diagnostic error code. The recovery environment may also offer system or software repair. Available choices depend on the model and the state of Windows and the factory recovery image.
Recovery software cannot fix a failed physical drive or another hardware fault. If diagnostics indicate a hardware problem, use Dell support for a hardware diagnosis rather than repeatedly attempting a reset.

Back up files and prepare the recovery key
Before a reset, use the recovery environment’s backup option to copy selected personal files to a USB flash drive or external drive. It does not preserve installed programs or system settings. Check the selected backup’s total size in the interface and choose a destination drive with more capacity than that total.
If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, have the recovery key available. Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery guidance describes recovery options; the reset itself can permanently erase files.

Choose the reset route that fits your situation

Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery guide warns: “The reset process permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and uninstalls any programs or drivers that you installed on your computer.” Treat either reset as destructive: back up files first whenever possible.
Understand local restore, Cloud Restore, and BIOSConnect
Local restore
Local restore uses a recovery image stored on the laptop’s internal drive. It is available only on selected product families and cannot help if that image is missing or corrupted.

Cloud Restore
Cloud Restore needs an active internet connection and a USB drive with at least 16 GB capacity. It downloads recovery content rather than depending on a usable local recovery image. Dell’s support matrix and model-specific instructions should be checked because requirements and availability vary.
BIOSConnect
On supported systems, BIOSConnect can download a service operating system when local recovery files are missing or damaged. Availability and network behavior vary by model and BIOSConnect implementation; some configurations require wired internet. Check Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery Support Matrix for your device.

If SupportAssist OS Recovery does not appear or will not start
- Missing F12 option: Confirm that the exact model is listed in Dell’s support matrix. Do not assume another Dell model’s menu will match yours.
- Recovery starts but the local image is unavailable: If your model supports it, Cloud Restore may be an alternative; it requires internet access and a 16 GB USB drive.
- Local recovery files are damaged or missing: Check whether BIOSConnect is supported on your model and configuration. Network requirements can vary.
- Diagnostics report hardware errors: Record the error code and contact Dell support for hardware guidance. A reset is not a substitute for repairing failed hardware.
Dell notes that Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A factory reset can return a system to its shipped software state, but that does not make an operating system currently supported by Microsoft.
