Why Josh Hart is not having finger surgery
Hart said doctors recommended a full joint replacement this summer. He has decided against the operation because, as he described it, it would end his playing career. Instead, he intends to play through the pain and continue protecting the finger with a splint or wrap, according to NBA.com’s Oct. 2, 2026 report of Fred Katz’s reporting for The Athletic.
Hart described the practical difficulty of the injury this way: “Grabbing a rebound, palming it, shooting, catching the ball, doing all that: You can’t do that.” The report does not quote a treating physician or provide a formal diagnosis, so the medical rationale and prognosis available publicly are limited to Hart’s account.
What happened to Hart’s finger
Hart injured his right ring finger during the Knicks’ 2025 Eastern Conference finals against the Indiana Pacers. He had offseason surgery after the series, then aggravated the finger during a summer scrimmage. At the start of the 2025–26 season, the plan was to play with protective gear and revisit treatment in the offseason. This October 2026 update replaces that earlier expectation of follow-up treatment.

ESPN’s Sept. 23, 2025 report said Hart had reaggravated the injury after a procedure and planned to play with a splint. The newer account says doctors later recommended a full joint replacement and Hart chose not to proceed with it.
What Hart has said about the symptoms
Hart described symptoms that vary from day to day: “Some days, it’ll be good. Some days it’ll hurt to catch the ball.” The report also says the injury affected a nerve and that Hart had experienced numbness while playing earlier in the season. It does not establish a specific diagnosis or show that the finger caused a particular performance result.

His reported shooting numbers do not establish the injury’s effect
CBS Sports/RotoWire’s Oct. 1, 2026 update reported that Hart made 41.3% of his three-point attempts over 66 regular-season games in 2025–26. That is season and game-count context only; it does not show how the finger affected his shooting.
