Reinsurance News reported on October 1, 2026, that Autonomous expects reinsurance prices to decline 10–15% at the January 2027 renewals, principally in property catastrophe. That is a forecast—not a renewal result or a prediction for every line of business. Autonomous said that, if borne out, the decline would complete the hard market’s reversal “at least from a pricing perspective.”
How much could property-catastrophe reinsurance prices drop in 2027?
Autonomous’s reported forecast is a 10–15% decline at the January 2027 renewal. A separate account of KBW’s post-Rendez-Vous discussions points in the same direction for property-catastrophe excess-of-loss (XoL): executives expected rates to fall by at least 10%. The KBW account supports the direction for that segment; it does not independently verify Autonomous’s exact range.
The forecast follows September’s Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous, an annual industry gathering where market participants discuss conditions ahead of January renewals. Autonomous described it as an event that “arguably fires the opening salvo in negotiations” for January. The forecast reflects expectations entering negotiations; actual terms and prices will depend on the risks ceded, loss experience, and market conditions at renewal.
Why are rates expected to decline?
Property-catastrophe prices already fell sharply in 2026
Howden reported that global risk-adjusted property-catastrophe rates-on-line fell 14.7% at January 1, 2026, after an 8% decline in the comparable 2025 renewal. Howden called the 2026 reduction the largest since 2014. It reported generally 10–20% decreases across US and European programs, while noting that outcomes varied with geography and loss experience. Howden’s January 2026 renewal report also quoted Howden Re CEO Tim Ronda saying: “Healthy supply dynamics and increased competition, particularly in property-catastrophe, created a genuine re-balancing of the market at this renewal.”

Reinsurer capital and capacity have supported competition
Howden said reinsurers’ strong balance sheets and retained earnings supported appetite, with supply more than sufficient for demand at the January 2026 renewal. Gallagher Re likewise pointed to capital accumulation and a persistent near-term supply-demand imbalance, assuming normalized catastrophe conditions and stable financial markets.
The capital figures reported by different publishers are not directly interchangeable. Insurance Journal reported Aon’s estimate of $790 billion in global reinsurer capital as of March 31, 2026. Reinsurance News separately cited Aon at $800 billion, up 40% from the 2022 trough, without specifying a precise measurement date in the article excerpt. Differences in date and scope mean these figures should not be treated as one consistent time series.

Strong returns leave room for price competition
Gallagher Re reported a 19.3% return on equity (ROE) for its reinsurance composite in 2025 and an 11% increase in capital that year. It estimated normalized 2026 ROE at 14–15%—an estimate, not a final observed result—assuming normalized catastrophe losses, realized capital gains, and reserve releases in line with historical experience. Gallagher Re’s July outlook, quoted by Insurance Journal, said: “We are mid-cycle, not at the bottom — which is precisely why cedents’ actions now could matter for years to come, and why reinsurers continue to seek access to attractive partnerships at acceptable terms.”
Midyear renewals also showed plentiful capacity
Insurance Journal’s July 2026 summary of broker updates described strong reinsurer appetite, plentiful capacity, and double-digit property-catastrophe reductions at June and July renewals. Those midyear indications add context for the January outlook, but they are not a guarantee of the same movement at the next renewal: renewal dates, geographies, portfolios, and loss experience differ.

Does a lower reinsurance rate mean broader coverage?
No. Price and contract structure are separate. A lower rate-on-line—the premium relative to the amount of reinsurance protection—does not itself mean a cedent gets a lower attachment point, broader coverage, or more protection against frequent smaller losses.
Howden said January 2026 rates had moved toward levels last seen about four years earlier, while attachments remained comparatively higher and terms tighter. S&P Global likewise noted that attachment points remained relatively stable at the 2026 renewal after the 2023 reset. Autonomous’s reported expectation is that reinsurers may be more willing to concede price than to loosen treaty structures. The forecast of a pricing reversal therefore should not be read as a full reversal of the hard market in coverage or risk transfer.

Does the forecast apply to all reinsurance?
No. The 10–15% headline is principally about property-catastrophe pricing; KBW’s separate indication is specifically for property-catastrophe XoL. KBW’s reported comments describe casualty differently: slowing rate increases, rather than outright price reductions. Outcomes also vary by geography, renewal date, loss experience, and treaty terms.
January 1 is the largest annual renewal date, representing roughly 50% of global reinsurance renewals, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. The date has a heavier European weighting; April 1 is more Asia-Pacific-focused, while June 1 and July 1 skew more toward the US. The January forecast is therefore significant, but it is not a summary of every regional or line-of-business renewal.

What could change the outlook?
KBW’s reported conversations identified substantial catastrophe losses as the factor most likely to change the current property-catastrophe direction. The expected decline is conditional on market conditions, not inevitable. Reinsurance News also reported Gallagher Re’s view that the market would need “well over $100bn of excess losses” to bring stability; that figure is reported secondhand in the October article, rather than drawn here from a separately reviewed original Gallagher source.
For cedents and investors, the useful distinction is between a market signal and a final renewal outcome: the forecast points to continued competition in property-catastrophe pricing, while realized prices and coverage will be determined treaty by treaty.
