The Energy Mix identifies Kipling as climate scientist and communicator Katharine Hayhoe’s former high school and reports that the school’s panels generated 243,946 kilowatt-hours in 2025. Across the board, TDSB says its solar installations total approximately 38 megawatts on 358 buildings.
Which Toronto school did Katharine Hayhoe attend?
The Energy Mix reported on October 1, 2026, that Kipling Collegiate Institute has rooftop solar panels and is Hayhoe’s former high school. Its report attributes the update to Hayhoe’s Talking Climate newsletter, drawing on information shared by TDSB technology consultant Geoff Day with Hayhoe’s father, a science educator and former TDSB science coordinator. Hayhoe summed up the family connection in her newsletter: “This week’s good news came to me through a particularly reliable source: my dad!” The Energy Mix’s report gives Kipling’s 2025 solar generation as 243,946 kWh. That school-specific figure is reported by the outlet; the board’s accessible program page does not independently confirm Kipling’s row.
How large is TDSB’s rooftop solar program?
TDSB says it began investing in rooftop solar in 2010. Its live Solar Schools page, accessed October 3, 2026, describes approximately 38 megawatts of installed capacity across 358 buildings, with close to 148,000 panels. The board says Potentia Renewable Inc. was involved in installations at 347 buildings; Beach Community Energy Cooperative has one installation at Kew Beach Public School.
Those figures describe the scale of the board’s estate-wide program, not how much electricity every school generates. Kipling’s 243,946 kWh is a reported school-level production figure for the 2025 calendar year, whereas 38 MW is installed capacity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How does the program involve students?
TDSB presents the solar arrays as both infrastructure and a learning resource. Students can use the board’s school energy-generation information to see how much electricity their school produces, calculate a carbon impact, and customize a downloadable “We Are a Solar School” poster for their community. The Solar Schools page provides the program information and poster.
Why do TDSB’s solar emissions figures differ?
TDSB materials publish substantially different annual emissions figures, and the available explanations do not reconcile them. They should not be read as interchangeable measurements of one settled annual offset.

| Source and date | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| TDSB Solar Schools page, accessed October 3, 2026 | About 8,000 tonnes of CO2 per year | The board’s stated annual offset for its arrays. |
| TDSB solar-generation calculator, live page; model uses 2024 emissions factor | About 20,529 tonnes of CO2e per year | Estimated annual reduction from modeled generation, using 38,357 kW, a 0.75 derate factor, 5.7 sun-hours per day, and a 2024 marginal emissions factor of 343 g CO2e/kWh. The calculator estimates approximately 59.85 million kWh of annual generation; these are modeled values, not metered production. |
| TDSB 2024–25 Climate Action Plan | About 114 tonnes of CO2 per year | The plan’s stated annual offset figure. Its relationship to the other published estimates is not explained. |
The calculation inputs and estimate appear on TDSB’s solar-generation calculator page; the 114-tonne figure appears in the board’s 2024–25 Climate Action Plan. Because the three values come from distinct board materials and no reconciliation is provided, the board’s installed-capacity and panel counts are clearer measures of program scale than any single annual emissions-offset figure.
