GB Bank announced on 1 October 2026 that it had surpassed £1 billion in cumulative lending, less than two and a half years after its stated May 2024 launch. The announcement does not define how the cumulative total is calculated, so it should not be read as a £1 billion loan book, annual lending figure, or balance-sheet asset total.
When did GB Bank reach £1bn in lending?
The bank announced the milestone on 1 October 2026 and said it had reached it in under two and a half years from launch. The contemporaneous announcement identifies May 2024 as the launch date. GB Bank’s milestone announcement and Bridging & Commercial’s coverage report the milestone and timing.
The date matters because the headline wording “after 2023 launch” conflicts with the May 2024 date in the announcement. Mortgage Solutions used that wording in its headline, but its article body also describes the milestone as occurring less than two and a half years after launch. The bank’s own About page gives a longer institutional history: it says GB Bank was founded in 2017 and received full banking authorisation in 2022. Founding, authorisation and operational launch are separate dates; the milestone coverage identifies May 2024 as the launch. Mortgage Solutions’ report and GB Bank’s About page provide that context.
What does the £1bn figure mean?
GB Bank describes the figure as cumulative lending. The announcement does not explain the calculation method, reporting cut-off details or whether the total represents loans originated, completed or another lending measure. It therefore cannot be treated as the bank’s outstanding loan-book value, annual lending, deposits or total assets.

That distinction is important when reading the bank’s earlier figures. In a company article published on 6 January 2026, GB Bank said its latest annual report and accounts showed £464 million in core lending activity, compared with £86 million in the previous period. The same article reported £2.6 billion in total assets and £2.3 billion in customer deposits. These are different measures and periods from the later cumulative £1 billion announcement; the bank also said lending grew 439% in 2025. None of those figures supplies the missing methodology for the October cumulative total. GB Bank’s January 2026 article sets out its figures.
What kind of lending does GB Bank offer?
GB Bank describes itself as a privately owned specialist bank focused on SME property finance, funded through retail deposits. Its product range includes buy-to-let, bridging, semi-commercial and commercial finance, aimed at property professionals and developers. The bank’s About page describes its focus, while its customer lending page explains its property-finance offering and describes bridging as short-term lending for purchasing, renovating or refinancing property.

The bank also presents brokers and other intermediaries as central to its proposition. Its intermediary page describes flexible lending for complex buy-to-let and bespoke bridging cases. The milestone announcement credits individually underwritten cases and intermediary relationships with supporting growth, but gives no figures for their individual contribution. Those are the bank’s explanations, not an independently established analysis of what caused the milestone. GB Bank’s intermediary page outlines its broker proposition.
Industry coverage reported that in 2026 GB Bank relaunched its commercial finance offering and raised its maximum loan size from up to £20 million to up to £25 million. This is time-sensitive product information, so borrowers and brokers should confirm current terms with the bank. Mortgage Solutions’ October 2026 report describes the change.

What the milestone does—and does not—show
The announcement establishes that GB Bank reported crossing a cumulative lending threshold and places that achievement within the period following its May 2024 launch. It does not, on its own, show how much lending remains outstanding, how the total compares with other lenders, or whether the bank’s growth is unusually fast for the sector. Those comparisons would require like-for-like figures, clear dates and consistent definitions.
GB Bank chief executive Eddie Trahearn called the milestone “a significant milestone for GB Bank and a reflection of the momentum we have built since launch,” according to the company’s statement carried in the announcement coverage. That characterisation is the bank’s view; the reported total is not an independent sector ranking.
