To connect a Galaxy phone or tablet to a TV or monitor by HDMI, first confirm that your exact model supports wired video output. If it does, connect it with a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, select the display’s HDMI input, then choose screen mirroring or Samsung DeX. A USB-C port alone does not guarantee HDMI output.
Check Galaxy HDMI compatibility before buying an adapter
Wired HDMI output is model-specific, not a feature shared by every Galaxy device with USB-C. Samsung’s US Galaxy DeX compatibility list covers selected Galaxy S and Note phones, Z Fold models, the A90 5G, and selected tablets. It also identifies exclusions: previous Z Flip models and the Z Flip7 FE are not supported for DeX display connections, and some Tab FE and Lite models lack HDMI output.
Look up the exact model number or product name on Samsung’s current list before purchasing an adapter. If you are outside the US, check your local Samsung support page: model availability and support guidance can differ by region. Samsung’s Gulf-region HDMI adapter guide provides setup instructions, but for US eligibility the current US compatibility page is the relevant reference.
What you need for a wired connection
- A compatible Galaxy phone or tablet: Confirm wired display output for your exact model before shopping.
- A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable: This is the core accessory for connecting a compatible Galaxy device to an HDMI display. Samsung says, “You can also use a standard USB-C to HDMI adapter to start DeX.” See its DeX connection instructions.
- An HDMI cable: You may need one if the adapter has an HDMI port rather than an attached lead.
- A TV or monitor with an HDMI input: The display must be set to the input used for the connection.
A multiport USB-C adapter, keyboard, and mouse are optional additions for a DeX workspace, not prerequisites for basic HDMI display. Samsung’s DeX troubleshooting guidance mentions a multiport adapter, but does not verify particular third-party hub models. Check that any accessory is appropriate for your Galaxy model.

How to connect a Galaxy phone to a TV with HDMI
- Verify compatibility: Find your exact Galaxy model on Samsung’s current support list for wired DeX or HDMI output.
- Connect the adapter: Plug the compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable into the phone or tablet.
- Connect the display: If needed, connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV or monitor.
- Select the HDMI input: Use the TV or monitor’s input/source control to choose the HDMI port you used.
- Respond to the device prompt: Unlock the Galaxy device and tap Start if prompted. The display may show the phone’s mirrored screen first.
- Switch to DeX if desired: Open the DeX notification or Quick Settings and select DeX. Samsung’s instructions are available under connecting to a display.
Screen mirroring and Samsung DeX are different
Screen mirroring duplicates the phone or tablet interface on the external screen. Samsung DeX presents a desktop-style interface on that screen instead. A wired connection can begin in mirroring mode, so seeing the phone screen does not necessarily mean the HDMI connection failed.
To change modes, open DeX from the notification or Quick Settings panel. In relevant software versions, Samsung also points to Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connected display > Extend to set the connected display to Extend. Choose the simple adapter if you only need a wired display connection. Consider a multiport adapter only if you want to connect additional peripherals. A keyboard and mouse can make DeX easier to use, but are optional.

- Recheck model support: Confirm that the exact Galaxy model supports wired display output; having USB-C is not enough.
- Install available software updates: Update the phone or tablet, then reconnect.
- Check the adapter and cable: Make sure the adapter is compatible and fully seated at the Galaxy device and display ends.
- Confirm the TV or monitor input: Select the HDMI port that is physically connected.
- Choose the intended mode: Open DeX from its notification or Quick Settings entry. If available, check the connected-display setting and select Extend.
- Try another HDMI display: Connecting to a different TV or monitor can help determine whether the issue is specific to the original display.
Samsung’s adapter guidance advises checking that the display supports the required resolution and refresh rate, but the cited materials do not establish one universal output specification for every Galaxy model and adapter. Check documentation for the exact device and display rather than assuming a particular resolution or refresh rate.
