His remarks signal patience about timing—not a promise that rates will stay put or that the Federal Reserve has ruled out another increase.
What Jefferson meant by “no urgency”
In remarks prepared for the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, Jefferson said future policy adjustments should depend on data trends, the economic outlook and the balance of risks. “Any future adjustments in policy should be determined by carefully examining trends in the data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks,” he said, as quoted by Reuters on October 1, 2026.
He also said that he and his colleagues would need to reach their own judgment, “which may take more time,” and that additional data could help officials discern trends and the appropriate policy stance. In context, “no urgency” describes a process and timing judgment: Jefferson did not call for an immediate follow-up to September’s increase. It does not mean he opposed that increase or has ruled out later action.
Where rates stood after September
The Federal Reserve raised its federal funds target range by a quarter percentage point at its mid-September meeting, to 3.75%–4.00%, Reuters reported. Policymakers’ projections pointed to one more increase in 2026. That projection is not a decision to raise rates at a particular meeting, nor a commitment that an increase will happen.

How Jefferson’s view compared with other officials
Jefferson’s emphasis on taking more time was not a unanimous view about the timing or need for further increases. Reuters’ October 1 account described officials expressing different judgments:
| Official | View on another increase | Condition or timing |
|---|---|---|
| Philip Jefferson, Fed vice chair | Did not urge an immediate follow-up; left future adjustments open. | Officials should assess data trends, the outlook and the balance of risks; more time and data may help. |
| John Williams, New York Fed president | Said one further upward adjustment might be appropriate. | Late in the year, if the economy followed his forecast. |
| Lorie Logan, Dallas Fed president | Judged that at least another 0.50 percentage point of increases would be needed to return inflation to the Fed’s 2% goal. | This was Logan’s assessment, not a committee estimate. |
| Neel Kashkari, Minneapolis Fed president | Forecast one more increase this year and another next year. | He said he did not have a strong view on whether the next increase should come at month’s end. |
These are individual officials’ views and forecasts, not separate policy decisions. Jefferson’s remarks likewise do not establish what the committee will decide at its next meeting.

What markets were pricing on October 1
Reuters reported on October 1, 2026, that traders were pricing about a 25% chance of an October increase, down from about 70% earlier that week after comments from Jefferson and Williams. This was a dated market-pricing snapshot, not a Federal Reserve forecast or announcement; market expectations can change quickly.

No. Jefferson’s remarks leave a future increase possible while arguing that officials should give more time and data a chance to clarify the outlook. Reuters also reported that policymakers’ projections included one further increase in 2026, but that projection does not settle whether, or when, the Fed will act.
