Loblaw Companies Limited (TSX: L), METRO Inc. (TSX: MRU) and George Weston Limited (TSX: WN) are three Canadian-listed examples of consumer-staples exposure through food retail, pharmacy and related businesses. Their everyday-demand focus can support a defensive investment thesis, but it does not make their shares safe from losses. One important wrinkle: George Weston controls about 52.6% of Loblaw’s outstanding common shares, so owning both does not provide two independent grocery exposures.
What “defensive” means for these stocks
Food and pharmacy services are everyday needs, which can make businesses in those categories relevant to investors seeking exposure to consumer staples. That describes the companies’ operating focus, not a proven pattern in their share prices. The available company results do not establish that these stocks preserve capital, fall less than the broad market during downturns, or outperform in a recession.
Share prices can still respond to operating costs, competition, regulation, labour, supply-chain disruption, consumer trade-down and valuation. Assessing defensive behaviour requires comparable share-return and volatility data over a defined period against a benchmark; the company reports cited here do not provide that comparison.
Three Canadian consumer-staples examples
Loblaw Companies Limited (TSX: L)
Loblaw is a Canadian food and pharmacy retailer whose businesses also include healthcare services, health and beauty products, apparel, general merchandise, and wireless products and services. In its Q4 2025 earnings release, Loblaw reported 3.5% comparable revenue growth and 10.9% growth in adjusted diluted net earnings per common share on a comparable 12-week basis. METRO Inc. (TSX: MRU)
METRO operates food and pharmacy businesses and describes itself as a retailer, franchisor, distributor and manufacturer. Its operations are concentrated in Québec and Ontario. Its food banners include Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, Food Basics, Adonis and Première Moisson; its pharmacy banners include Jean Coutu, Brunet, Metro Pharmacy and Food Basics Pharmacy. For fiscal 2025, METRO reported sales of C$22,006.7 million, up 3.7%, and net earnings of C$1,019.5 million, up 9.4%. Fully diluted EPS was C$4.63, up 12.7%; adjusted fully diluted EPS was C$4.77, up 10.9%. These are distinct reported and adjusted measures. The report also states that the dividend per share rose 10.5%, marking the 31st consecutive year of dividend growth. Past earnings or dividend growth does not guarantee future results or distributions.
George Weston Limited (TSX: WN)
George Weston is a publicly traded parent with significant Loblaw exposure as well as businesses including Choice Properties real estate and consumer goods. Its 2025 annual report reported revenue of C$63,903 million and operating income of C$4,416 million. Revenue increased by C$3,780 million from 2024; the company said the increase included a 53rd week and was primarily driven by positive same-store sales growth in food retail and drug retail, along with a net increase in retail square footage. How to think about the Loblaw–George Weston overlap
George Weston is not simply another independent grocery operator alongside Loblaw. Loblaw’s 2025 annual report says George Weston held approximately 52.6% of Loblaw’s outstanding common shares. Buying Loblaw gives direct exposure to the retailer; buying George Weston gives exposure through a parent whose businesses also include real estate and consumer goods. The two holdings therefore differ, but their shared underlying Loblaw business should not be counted as separate diversification. How much overlap a portfolio actually has depends on each position’s weight and valuation.

What to check before treating one as a defensive holding
- Business exposure: Distinguish food and pharmacy operations from George Weston’s broader parent-company mix.
- Geography: METRO’s concentration in Québec and Ontario is relevant when considering regional exposure.
- Earnings measures: Keep reported and adjusted figures separate, and match each growth rate to its period and stated comparison.
- Dividends: METRO’s investor-relations page says its stated policy is to pay dividends representing 30% to 40% of prior-year net earnings before extraordinary items. It also says dividends are subject to board approval, so this policy is not a promise of a particular future payment. METRO Investor Relations.
- Valuation and financial obligations: Compare valuation, balance-sheet obligations, dividend yield and payout using consistently dated figures. The company sources cited here do not establish a common-date valuation or yield comparison.
- Share-price behaviour: Check historical drawdowns and volatility against a broad Canadian equity benchmark over the same defined period before concluding that a stock has behaved defensively.
These company disclosures describe operating businesses and historical results. They do not, by themselves, establish which stock is most attractive today or how any will perform in a downturn.
